Perm, Privolzhsky, Russian Federation richardcowley...

Perm, Privolzhsky, Russian Federation 11kaks... much buy the kitchen sink if the urge took you, but we settled for some toiletries and fruit. We were quite tempted by all the furry hats though!! A mammoth walk through the town led us to "Big Ben", which we were expecting to be a copy of the real Big Ben in London. After an hour of walking, we were a little disappointed to realize that Big Ben is actually just a restaurant and not at all like the London Big Ben. But finding the positive, the walk was really nice ...
Perm, Privolzhsky, Russian Federation edandaliHello again We've moved onto Perm now, which in Soviet Times was a restricted city, even to Russian citizens, and never appeared on any maps!!!! This was due to a huge (and I mean HUGE) tank/cannon/rocket making factory located in the city. Military staff weren't allowed to leave the city either whilst they were serving, for fear of revealing secrets. Spent today out at Perm 36, a former Gulag prison camp, that started life in the ...
Perm, Privolzhsky, Russian Federation natgordonAfter queuing for 1 hour the day before for tickets, we returned today and managed to successfully book tickets to Irkutsk. We ended up spending the rest of the day sitting in the hostel waiting for 3 french people to come back that we had met earlier in the day. We managed at 8pm to weave our way through the metro, which was decorated with marble floors and massive chandeleers, and then met up with another french man, Phillipe, who helped us to ...
Moscow, Russian Federation hwhitelandAfter a day of rest in Yekaterinberg, we spent half the day visiting the sights including the place where the Romanovs met their end. This is signified by a small iron cross which has recently been supplemented by a huge gold domed church with impressive gold iconography inside. The City is a mix of old wooden buildings and modern ...
Perm, Russia p2pjaguarThe first day of the journey was relatively sedate. Lots of sitting and staring aimlessly out of the window, watching the countryside roll past. It's surprising how it's possible to sit and stare for hours on end, given the view has fallen somewhat short of spectacular so ...
The Vostok, Russia mrconfused... hooked on sweet black Russian tea. The train is religiously on time to every station, where everyone jumps off for a stretch and the locals are hawking food and beer and various touristy bits of ****. Sergei has come back to the cabin with a piece of dried fish, which thankfully doesn't stink. The train is kept clean and our car and cabins are vacuumed and cleaned every day it seems. The loos are kept clean as ...
Perm, Russia grumpytraveller... and is performing admirably so far. Much better for fast shooting, video and night shots, but I still have to work on improving the contrast and resolution for sunny day shooting, as the blue in the sky or the greens of the landscapes sometimes elude me unless I destroy the shot composition. Practice makes perfect and if I don't freeze to death in the wastes of Siberia, you should see some great pics and videos of ...
