The next few blogs are of separate trips that we did: Sue to Rhodes in the Greek Isles (on her list of "must-do's!" for many, many years) and The Hague in the Netherlands (something she didn't DARE hope she could one day do), and John to Istanbul and Gallipoli in Turkey, a place I have always wanted to visit to acknowlege the great sacrifice given by so many there.
We both flew out from London Heathrow and the 16th of November and returned to ...
... of the point, the old site of the Colossus of Rhodes that guarded the entrance to the harbour. The huge fort with massive towers encircled Old Town and dominated the vista as we looked out from the 15th storey of the ship. The fort is made of a coarse block stone that is a mix between limestone and sandstone which provides that warm golden hue when the sun hits it, a rare occasion today. As the rain continued during the morning we ate a leisurely breakfast sitting on ...
Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece tapestryAnother beautiful day. Sunny 78 degrees on the island of Rhodes. We travel to Lindos half way down the island. To see the Acropolis were Paul spoke to the Greeks. A long climb to the top with a view to forever. Just outstanding. Back to the boat early to catch some sun by the pool.
I am going to upload a couple of pics from yesterday on Myconos to give you an idea of the beauty here.

... all we could of the castle, we ventured outside the walls to go check out some ancient ruins. On the map, there was a big green park with some old ruins labeled, and it didn't look too far away. What the map didn't show was that it was uphill, hard to find, and when we got there it wasn't a park at all, but just an ancient stadium and some old columns surrounded by ...
Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece tommcatt... of little alleyways again and you realized that you had come back to where you started. It was fun and we spent about 4 hours in there and then walked back to the ship. Had a late lunch on the ship and went to our cabin to have our afternoon siesta and watched Get Smart on tv. We decided to have a day off the grog so watched the ship leave from deck 7 and headed to the Casino for a short time and then came home.
Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece stephgraemeAfter a quick breakfast, we headed off to the port to catch our 9am ferry to Rhodes, but it looked like everyone else in Fethiye had the same idea. The boat was full of those annoying package holiday makers on a day trip to Rhodes.
After a rough ride, we bought our tickets to Athens (Rhodes to Athens €53 each, one way) and had the whole day to spend in Rhodes before our next ferry departed.
Rhodes was famous worldwide in the ancient world for the Colossus of Rhodes ...

... tzaziki and taramasalata with bread bought from a local shop for most meals. Cold water can be obtained from the seahorse fountain or the occasional Ottoman marble tap, although these have fallen into a state of disrepair and have become receptacles for cigarette butts. Walking around the streets in the evening is a gourmet nightmare for people who have a budget to stick to. Smells waft at you from all angles and waiters implore you to enter deliciously lit sunken gardens, nestled with ...
