Kalbarri 24-25/11

... drink in MacDonalds and tried
to connect to the free wifi which didn't work-not happy. Then got some food for dinner and beer.

The further out of Perth we go it becomes slightly more hill billyish! Arrived in Kalbarri about 4pm, found where we are
staying. There is 2 places to in Kalbarri which are relatively cheap, the YHA hostel or Big River Ranch. We decided to go for
the ranch. The accommodation is quite basic, but its cheap at $20 ...

Finding the WOW factor

Well, we've been in Oz for the best part of a month now and we’re still not quite getting to grips with the lingo. Check out this paro as an example and don’t worry if you feel a bit like a drongo. It seems to be a language written by bludgers, given the number of times they shorten words with o or i (no offence to our Aussie cobbers).

G’day mates and sheilas! How’re ya going? What a little ripper this first part of the trip North’s been! Leaving ...

Up before the flies

... face, one finally got past Rachel’s ‘bush salute’ (hand waving around your face to fend off the flies) and not only got up her nose but managed to get itself inhaled. After 5 minutes of pain and nose blowing, it finally appeared and yes, we have a photo…!

We spent the rest of the day relaxing by the pool then playing pool at the pub again. It’s been a good couple of days and Kalbarri is definitely an underrated National Park.

Hump back Whales and natures window

... Apart from that the coastline and cliffs are great too and includes several walks. So another beach BBQ and stayed the night in Kalbarri. Following morning it ****** rain but off anyway and into the national park… This involved driving over 100km off road which.. These unsealed roads are usually dusty as hell but it had turned to pure muck in ...

We had to see a few more gorges before the end

... water. But when you find out more about them, they become more interesting. They are layered limestone rocks built by single-celled cyanobacteria. This thing is, scientists thought this bacteria had died out millions of year ago! Then in 1954, they discovered the ones at Hamelin Pool. The only other country with colonies is the Bahamas. They are able to live at Hamelin Pool because the water ...

Kalbarri

... littered in places with fridges and piles of gravel......not quite what we had in mind! We found a decent spot and set up camp. Mark took care of the camp fire, whilst he was away looking for wood I hear a noise, which sounded like a wild pig and it seemed to be getting closer (it was dark by now), so I made as much noise as I could to try to scare it away. The noise went away but when Mark was back later it ...

One Irish Stalker

The next leg of what is surely a frontrunner for the title of "slowest roadtrip of all time" saw our little two car convoy heading towards Kalbarri National Park, but not before a short trip out of Australia. Yep, you read that right.
A few hours of hellish dirt roads took us to Hutt River Province, one of those little gems of travelling that hasn't yet been overrun by the tourist hoardes. Years ago, the owner of the Province decided that he ...

red rocks at Kalbarri N.P.

The view through a gate of red rocks is seen on all the ads of the Kalbarri N.P. Apart from this, high limestone cliffs drop into the sea and a sandstone riv** valley shows its beauty. Unfortunately the mudroad to the gate was closed due to rains, so we had to squeeze into the oth** lookouts with all the oth** tourists. Only a small part of the park has roads or walking paths, and many rules apply for getting more in touch with nature. Theoretically rockclimbing is possible, but only with a ...

The rain came back :(

... and there were only a few buildings left. The town was deserted in the 1800's due to floods and a reduction in the prices of agriculture and the buildings have now been taken over by the National Trust. It was interesting to see how they lived.

We were going to Geraldton next and we drove through it - it didnt look that great (sorry Geraldton) so we ...

Kalbarri National Park

... It's like standing next to a flat pink blancmange.

In a fit of ambition we even purchased two snorkeling sets complete with flippers. Obviously we are expecting great things from the Mersey and the Tyne when we get home!

One thing Kalbarri has in droves are flies. There are literally billions of them. As soon as you step outside of the car they are crawling all over you ...
