Kakadu National Park 2. Tag

Kakado

The first thing you realise about Kakado is that it is vast. Must be about half the size of Ireland. I spent just 2 nights in a campsite in Jabiru. Kakado lodge campsite I think it was called. It actually has a bar and a great swimming pool. we said we were staying one night but stayed for 2. I bought a machetti in Jabiru so now Jo thinks I am a psycho, hehe. Kakakdo is amazing in the wet season but unfortunately, much of it is inaccessible. I took a 5 hr tour that consisted of 2 boat trips a...

Nitmiluk NP and Katherine Gorge then onto Kakadu

This morning we ventured the 5 minute walk from the campsite down to the Katherine Hot springs. There were a few locals already there but it wasn't too busy. The water was beautifully clear and there were two small waterfalls generating bubbles in the water and creating a nice little spa area. We then drove onto Nitmiluk National Park, to see Katherine Gorge, which is a large gorge consisting of 13 smaller gorges. We booked a 15 minute helicopter ride for a 11am, which was recommended and fun...

Day 52 & 53. Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory. 240km from Darwin. Now that the fridge is fixed I can tell Dad....it wasn't working...again! We awoke early on Wednesday morning to go and get it fixed. I have no idea how this local company remain in business...talk about **** service! We were told to get there at 7.30am so we could be on the road "straight away". They were having a staff meeting so we eventually spoke to someone about 10 minutes later. The guy gave us a lead to hook...

Leaving Darwin for Kakadu

This morning we are packed up and moving out of the Airport Resort. We are quite sad to leave Darwin and its spread out laid back lifestyle. I fear we have been somewhat spoilt in this resort too. We head off to pick up our Maui camper van - the newest fleets in Australia, all I can say is i'm glad we didn't get an old one!! We drove away from Darwin in our camper feeling quite down. The engine roars like a dog, the door doesn't lock properly and it is just somewhat very basic, I had had bett...

Kakadu National Park

We awoke feeling refreshed, we had a nice breakfast in the van - weetabix and nutella sandwiches for some. We headed out tho the bowali visitor centre which we enjoyed very much, lots of displays about the National Park and the customs and people in the area. After this we headed for Ubir and the rock art. The art was spectacular and also very rewarding was the view from the top lookout point that we climbed in temperatures of 37 degrees. The views looked over the wetlands and beyond into lan...

Chatting to other travellers at stops on the Great Northern Highway, the oft-repeated question is, up or down? Everybody is either en route to Perth or Darwin. When I said I was heading north, people would often look at me aghast, and say ‘But it’s the wrong season!’ As if I wasn’t aware that Darwin is edging into it’s monsoonal ‘Wet’. As if I would say, ‘Oh you’re kidding! Well, I’d better turn around and drive several thousand kilo...

Kakadu - Day 2

I was up early on our second day in Kakadu and I made sure to clatter plates and talk loudly in the hope of stirring resident sleep monster, Lisa. She eventually rose, bleary-eyed, grunted in my direction and stomped off to the shower block.

We wanted to be at Ubirr early, since there were several walking trails we wanted to do before it got too hot. The first was through part of the monsoonal rainforest that covers large areas of the tropical north of Australia. Monsoonal rainforests ...

Kakadu Safari

Litchfield National Park we saw thousands of different types of termite mounds. The Spinifex Termite mounds we had seen on our drive up and down the west coast had impressed us but many of these mounds were even taller still. Also the quantity of mounds here was astounding. We saw Cathedral termite mounds up to seven metres tall and a field of Magnetic termite mounds that resembled a cemetery full of gravestones - the front and back of the mounds facing north and south to help control the int...

Die mit dem Frosch duscht

... Tag bzw.
