Weather's improving!

... met a man from Birmingham! Who ran a jacket potato stall, and so lunch was saved!! I had the ‘pommie’ special of jacket pot with beans!! We had a short wind blown walk along the beach before heading back to the car to find our hostel.
Our accommodation was The Custom House, a very old building, the kitchen didn’t impress us very much so out for dinner we went!! Unfortunately we couldn’t find anywhere, so we settled for the local fish and chip shop. Where the ...

Nelson Day 43 and 44

... After chilling on the beach and having some peanut butter sandwiches I continued my walk to Torrent Bay, meeting Rachael's guided hike and ended up getting a guided walk for free!! We eventually made our way back to the Aquataxi from Torrent Bay. I got home at 6pm, exhausted and spent the evening watching television with Chanelle and Lucy.

Nelson Day 44

Today I got up rather late, but headed over to the centre of New Zealand, from the top of the peak ...

Waterfalls, Windy Welly, Arrival in the South

... waterfalls. It was about putting a tiny boat through tinier spaces and dropping between rock ledges. It was interesting. We went down half the waterfalls backwards. There was a lot of jumping around and crunching of the boat to get it to fit through tight tight spaces. It was a beautiful secluded river though, and the only commericial rafts on it are the four that go out each day from the River Valley lodge. The 2 ...

Nelson & Abel Tasman

... what to do the next day, which coincidentally turned out to be Nelson's annual holiday so they were both off work. We decided to spend the day in Abel Tasman National Park so we drove as far as you can then caught an Aquataxi. This is a speedboat which seats 20 and, as we had signed up for 'A Slice of Paradise' (or 'a Slice of Pav' as the staff referred to it), the driver took us from the bottom of the park right up to the top and then dropped ...

Abel Tasman National Park to Takaka - Day 275

Car wouldn't start this morning, dead battery!! No mobile phone reception and I'm in the **** end of nowhere, first car calamity I've had in 29,000km on the road this year. Luckily a few cars are dotted around camp so I have some hope of getting a jump start if someone has some leads!! Did manage to get the car started in the end, luckily a British couple had jump leads, thank god! But this ended up being the least of my worries on this eventful day. Found out at ...

Gruss Ralf P.S. Fun Fact Thirteen of the world's 18 penguin species have been recorded in the New Zealand region (including the Ross Dependency/Antarctica).

Funny Farm

... Tasman National Park catching a water taxi into the park and dodging showers before timing the tides so we could cross the river estuaries - it was still waist deep and freezing cold even at low tide something a group of elederly Japanese ladies did not appreciate as they rolled up their trousers to just above their knees - oh how we laughed knowing that the water had reached our waists!!
