... me until they were right below me. You're supposed to stay 20 ft away from them, but hey, they were coming to me! AND, there was a huge endangered monk seal sunning on the beach (they're7 ft long and 300-400 lbs). From a distance, we watched him shuffle and slide toward the water until the surf pulled him in. Then we watched him surf out to sea. I know, right?! Such an amazing day!! Such a many-faced island. Fiery volcanoes, lush forests, stark lava ...

We spent a relaxing week exploring our area, going to Kailua Pier and the beach, getting supplies at the market, having libations around the pool, and playing cards. On Sunday, we went to church at Mokuaikaua Church. It's the church with the steeple that you can see from our lanai - a 4 minute walk from our condo. It rained most of the night and the humidity was so high we had trouble sleeping. At 6:30 this ...

We were both oohing and aahing the entire time and had there been more than 2 pull outs for us to stop, this road would have taken us a lot longer to traverse. Once we started descending again, the island of Maui just North of us seemed nothing more than short swim away.

Pololu Valley was gorgeous as well. The overlook would have sufficed - this is how awesome the ...

... the illegality of it. Sound familiar!!

Today there is a movement in Hawaii that favours the restoration of total independence for Hawaii. Let's hope they eventually achieve their goal.

We saw Muku'aikaua Church which was completed in 1938. It is Hawaii first Christian Church. The church is made of crushed coral and lava rock. The interior is decorated with Koa wood.

On the other side of the ...
