the bus to alanya

... to Alanya, I opted to take the coach this time instead of hitch hiking. I got into the station at 6:30 and then took a city bus to get closer to the beach. I think I was pretty much in the wrong neighbourhood for cheap hotels but was able to negotiate a room down from 50 to 30 TL. The apartment had a living room, kitchen, dining area and bedroom!

Now for a walk-about town for the evening...

From Silifke to Alanya

... among others). According to our guide book Silifke is also known for the fact that Frederick Barbarossa died there. He drowned in the Goksu river while leading his troops on the third Crusade. Robert's history teacher at high school always told that he was thrown from his horse and fell into one of his sharp "tools of the trade", drowning is less glamorous for a warlord isn't it? Apart from birds and beautiful medieval castles, the Eastern ...

... lined up waiting to drop their loads of sugar beets. They will be processed here and shipped. Sugar beets are a large agricultural product in Turkey. We have seen field after field being hand harvested during our tour. We pass the ruins of one of the oldest caravarserai. Wish we had time to stop and walk around this area. The Silk Road is most prominent between Konya and Cappadocia. These camel carvan routes also transported china, spices, jewerly and paper from ...

Back to the Coast

... Damo felt energetic and even swam out to the castle while I lay like a lazy whale on the beach! From Kizkalesi we headed along the coast road towards Alanya. Unfortunately the coastal road was slow as it wound it and out so we made a decision to head inland. Not the best decision ever made on our part. It took us 9 hours and part of the road wasn't sealed and ...

A long, tiring day of tourism

... Roman ruins and an equally large amount of touristy shops and restaurants. I didn't care much for the commercialism (although the bellydance outfits were a little bit better quality) but the ruins were awesome, and the only part I saw that charged admission (the Roman Theater) was 5 Turkish Lira. That's less than 4 dollars/3 Euros/2 Pounds. Compare that with 11 Euros a head to get into the ruins in Rome!

Going Out and Eating in Turkish

... Beyond being good company, Mike was able to fill me in on some of the conversations (or arguments) around us. Turns out that the Turks argue about the same things as everyone else: How much such and such should cost, bus schedules, and the like. Perhaps the main difference was that everytime I got on a bus with Mike, I knew exaclty where I was going. That peace of mind is invaluable, when you're like me and sometimes getting on the right bus requires a lot of ...

Blue Voyage from Antalya to Kas (and back)

... The water ran cold out of the shower faucet, which hung over the toilet. It smelled bad in there. We kept the door shut and the portholes open. Our room was basically a bunk almost for 2, with a small space for luggage. It would do--it was only about $650 USD for both of us for the entire week--meals included. And the sun was out, we were on the Mediterranean and celebrating our 6 years married / 18 years together anniversary! We ate a huge afternoon ...
