Today we left Bideford and headed to the village of Clovelly. It is a very steep cobbled village with no car access and is owned by a family trust. So only donkeys and sleds can be used to take things down to the village. So has kept its traditional way of living which is great. And is exactly what you imagined a traditional fishing village in this part of the country to be like. Has cute little museums and churches and a great harbour. But allow plenty of time to get back up as it is a big w...
Plymouth, England, United Kingdom ka.duncanToday we had an excursion to Cornwall. Devon and Cornwall are pretty much on opposite sides of the river from each other. So very close. We stopped off to take photos of the famous St Michael's Mount near Penzance-it is an old monastry on an island that is only accessible by foot at low tide. Once it is high tide you have to take a boat over. Would have been great to have gone over to it-but guess will have to save that for next time! We then drove onto Lands End. Cool to see. Pity about that...

Plymouth, Plymouth, United Kingdom pandakid... action.

For some time we had discussed the feasibility of undertaking charity work in the developing world. Our travels in South East Asia and India had been a real eye opener. On the one hand we saw such poverty that initially all I wanted to do was go home. This was before Slumdog Millionaire had opened our eyes to what life is really like in the world's fastest growing economy so it was quite a shock. Whilst on the other hand ...
Stoke Gabriel, Devon, England, United Kingdom conchwillowIt was a shopping and driving day today. We went for a bit of an impromptu tour around the Bodmin Moor area (didn't see the beast unfortunately) and then went to a big department store called Trago Mills where I bought a big road map for when I get a job driving around Europe.

Not much else to report for today, but we did see a cool scooter with thousands of mirrors and a tail!
Liskeard, England, United Kingdom marksadventuresFor our first full day away, we did some shopping in the morning, then went for a walk around Looe, a small seaside town. Looe was mainly based on the fishing trade, but also had quite a lot of shops to browse.

We saw quite a few people fishing for crabs, using a small mesh bag with some bait on a line, and it was amazing at how quickly the crabs were being picked up...20-30 seconds was enough in some ...
Looe, England, United Kingdom marksadventuresFor my next trip I was off to Cornwall in the South West for a week with my Nan, aunties Jeanette and Marion and uncle Roland. We stayed at Lakeview Villas, about a 5 minute drive out of Liskeard.

Today we drove down from London, and aside from a bit of a holdup at Bath, it was a smooth drive down.
Liskeard, England, United Kingdom marksadventuresThe previous night was a shocker trying to find somewhere to park... we thought it would have been nice to stay in the village of Fowey, but by the time we got there it was well after dark and I was jack of driving.
It looked like all good roadside parks were double yellow lines(for those that don't know, in the UK that means no parking) We discovered later that it only applied during the high season, but we couldn't see those signs in the dark. The rest of the town ...

Teignmouth, England, United Kingdom speat... happened and another 22 people (Patricia's absolute maximum) sat down for lunch, with the added excitement of weighing anchor and steaming towards Bolt Tail in the wonderful weather. All ashore Sunday afternoon and back to Derry's Cottage to continue festivities, until some had to go to a club AGM. They were quite noisy!
