Looking Goodin Dalian

... doesn't fit you and you look even better! Remember, if it doesnt look like its been sitting in the sun for 20 years, YOU CANT WEAR IT!

If you don't have the perm, (mostly if your a guy), then you have outrageous hair!! Especially popular is shaving the sides, and waxing your hair up and over it, kinda like a greasy bowl cut that sticks out over the shaved sides like ...

I did it

... meal cost 32 yuan. When I compare it to American prices, it is less than $5 so I should be fine with that. But to compare it to China meal prices it is quite expensive.

As a bonus I am adding some KFC pictures. This is taken in Dalian and my western friends call it the KFC church. Because ... it looks like a Church. None of the others look like this one. So, I wanted to share it with you. Enjoy...

Cool and Clear

... behind me were ok since they would honk to let me know they wanted to be where I was. But one time I looked up and saw a car coming toward me – IN MY LANE!!! I had to go around him but check first that I didn’t pull into the path of a car screaming down the road. Finally, I made it to the beach and then I rode on the sidewalk as much as possible. I know, I know – I am a chicken.

The view was still clear, but by now the sun was getting lower in the sky so I had ...

Long Haul to Liaoning

... and the sand is white. My standards are too high and Dalian fell way short. I caught a cab back to the city and watched episodes of the Beijing soap followed by more Korean food. This turned out to be just what I needed, so it was a good day after all, despite not really seeing eye to eye with Dalian.

Later that night, I got a text message from Xiao Ma asking where I was and what I was up to. He said he was at Erdaohai with his dad and missed me a lot. I ...

Finally in Dalian

... I quit feeling sorry for myself. At least I had a seat. The night was long and I arrived in Dalian at 6 am the next morning. My manager at the school picked me up and took me to my apartment. I had to do a couple of things that day in between naps, and had to get ready for training which would begin the following day. So, I am settled in Dalian and attending the TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) training. More later....

Guilty Pleasures

... didn’t fess up right at the beginning. She was happy with her massage, but after some comparisons I definitely think I got the more skilled masseuse.

To top off the evening, we headed to Susan’s, one of the only true western restaurants in this part of China. I went all out and ordered an orange Julius and a poutine. It is not quite the same, but a pretty darn close replica, especially for China. The ...

We will English You

... ripped off like foreigners always are... bargain hard.

Finding the ‘mall’ itself wasn’t too ************ce we went through the doors—it was like entering a giant, six storey flea market. We wandered, and wandered, and finally came across some stalls that offered clothing, but none had plain t-shirts. After what felt like hours, but was probably closer to one, we found a place that had a few options... We explained we wanted 15 black ...

Bankruptcy

It is Heidi first full day of teaching, and we are launching our Stock Market Game. The premise is simple, randomly handout six cards to every student that is either $100 or a stock (A,B,C,D) explain to them the goal of the game is to amass the most wealth that they can. It works best with two people, because one person can be in charge of randomly changing the price of stocks (all going up) and the other can be the bank, loaning out $1000 for every $100 of insurance ...

Food Street Markets

... on average. The markets are lively, colorful, and abundant. There are several huge markets, 500 or a thousand vendors, assembling daily to sell their carrots, cabbage, chicken, and corn. Also neighborhood street markets in off-traffic curb locations and/or alleys with vendors carrying in their products in baskets on a stick over their back. Little tiny ladies carrying a hundred pounds of oranges or onions. And there are individual ...

Month One in Dalian

... Americans. The locals like US money, and have regard for America, and their perspective is very global, at least here in Dalian, with lost of shipping and industrial production almost all for the overseas markets. Several entertaining shopping malls, one that claims 400,000 sf and it's mostly vendors in 150 sf shops. All underground. Great public squares. Also some respectable architecture, historic ...
