Arrived in Budapest after a long flight. The Viking Skadi is a beautiful longboat. Budapest is a magnificent city and well deserves the title of "Paris of Eastern Europe". The visit to the Duheny St. synagogue and Holocaust museum was very moving. The night sail leaving Budapest heading for Slovokia was ...

    Gyor is a little gem

Gyor is exactly halfway between Buda and Vienna and we headed out this am via train. Interestingly, our train was late - which in our experience - rarely happens in Europe. This was somewhat nerve wracking b/c this is the deepest we've been into a country where we are completely clueless to the language. Can't read or understand a word. (In W Europe, we can usually pick up a word here and there, especially if ...

Arrived in Visegrad, had breakfast, unloaded the bike and off on the road. Just a few of us are doing the long route today. En route to the first ferry we saw about 20 herons in the fields bordering the river. We covered the 16 km to the ferry in 40 minutes but, unfortunately, the ferry had just departed so we had a one hour wait to the next one! We had a very pleasant run back to the Visegrad (opposite side of the bank). We had coffee ...

... Visegrad castle sits high on the hill overlooking the town and the river, and is in a superb location. It is now just a ruin and unfortunately we were not able to explore it, but we were able to have lunch at a popular restaurant high on the hill and close by. While eating, we were serenaded by a trio comprising 2 violins and double bass who wandered from table to table playing a mix of music from Brahms Hungarian Dances to pop tunes, ...

Today after a lovely breakfast we had a tour of Budapest with the highlight being a guided tour through the Budapest Royal Opera house. This beautiful building took our breath away especially when we had an impromptu operatic performance on the grand staircase as we sipped champagne. Unfortunately the battery died on the camera so I ...
