Tortuguero Canals

This past weekend, our whole group traveled to the Carribbean side of the country to visit the Rain Forest in Tortuguero National Park! The experience staying in the Jungle Lodge for two nights and exploring the canals by boats by day seeing all the exotic birds and hearing the sounds of the natural wildlife in the forest was awesome! Part of the group hiked up a steep mountain one morning and witnessed the Carribbean Ocean on one side and the rainforest and canals on the other! Of course, I ...

Turtle Beach Lodge

Read On at Klenske, Ink. After an early morning wake up call, we were picked up at our hotel's front door by the lodge's bus. We then set out for our 'wild' trip to the jungle lodge. The first half was a four hour ride through the country. After getting out of San Jose, we first went through a national park full of rainforest covered mountains. It was actually sunny out, which I guess is rare, and we could see the top of the dormant volcanoes. We stopped for a great costa rican breakfast alon...

... the canals. We entered narrow canals with the most amazing vegetation on each side of us. It really was the wild forest. We saw mostly birds and even a cayman (small crocodile) hiding near some logs and only sticking the head up. I must give it to our captain and our guide that they have incredible eye sight for spotting even the smallest animals. And in fact we also got to see a turtle. Well not a sea turtle, but a tiny freshwater turtle sticking only its head up ...

Her shell was about 3 feet wide by 4-5 feet long! She moved really slowly but it was interesting to watch her make it back to the Caribbean.

It took another 30 minutes before another turtle was spotted and but it was only about 1/4 km away this time. She had just started laying her eggs ...

Journey to the Caribic and all over the country!

... we took a taxi until the blockage, then walked though it, looking anxiously at the people, getting down under some strings and passing by washing machines, burning tires and who else knows what was out there :) We never found out, what the strike was actually about, but it was a funny experience of costarican style strike *g* Lucky as we are, we once again found a Pickup, that took us all the way up to Limon and from there we went on a 5 hour boat ride all the way up to Tortuguero ...

The grubby Rasta with no shoes on!!!

... In the evening Willis drove us back to Toruguero by boat for some dinner and drinks at the only club in town. On entering the club at 8.30pm so way to early for anything to be happening we found it to be a large wooden building with wooden floors, a double door dropping you straight into the river below, fairy lights coiled around the beams and a disco ball which looked like it had seen better days ...

... King line. Yes, really we only substituted one questionable food for another, but it was something we knew and could trust. Heaven. After that little R&R break we were off again. The rest of the journey was supposed to take about 1.5 hours, but it took a little longer than that because of the road we had to take. If you could call it that. It was paved in some places, dirt in others, nothing but wheel rim deep ...

... it heaved itself out of the hole and into the waves. We were then herded over to another mama turtle, who had finished laying her eggs and was in the process of camouflaging and aerating the nest. They like to cover the eggs with lots of loose soil so oxygen can still get in, and they typically dig them right where the sand meets the fertile soil, so they're partially in the shade. First they cover the nest with sand using their hind flippers, then they ...
