Bharatpur

Birds...

Early bus to Bharatpur - a small town on the edge of Rajasthan home to the Keoladeo Ghana national park, famous for its birds.

Our first visit evening we walked round, spotting antelope, deers, a giant eagle and a small pack of jackals. Before back to the basic but delightful jungle lodge restaurant for vegetarian food, water and relaxed to bed by 9.

The next day arrived at the park for 6:30 a.m. - the best time for birds apparently. We took a rickshaw round - the rickshaw driv...

Drive to Karauli

... to grab on. It was a bit like the Pied Piper. After spending time at the fort/palace, we went to one of the local Hindu temples to see the women's arti (evening devotional prayer). I was the only female without a scarf - will not make that mistake twice on this trip! because two of my fellow travellers got to dance to the chanting. It was a really awesome experience and I also wanted to get up and dance, but I was ...

Drive to Bharatpur via Fatehpur Sikri

... of the trip today. The sun was really bright and hot; I was covered up to no avail, it still got me! We arrived at the hotel and received leis of marigolds (which of course I want to keep, but I took a picture instead) *picture* and had a wonderful 2 hour break. I think most people went swimming in the hotel pool, but I used the time to just be alone and recharge - since the tour leader gave me my own room (my turn!). In the late ...

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

... The bird is intelligent enough to catch firefly and take it back to the nest to use as a light. Dead clever!! Aftrer the bird sanctuary I chilled out a bit and found a large patch of wasteland on the edge of town. This was prime kite flying territory and it just so happens I have a small kite with me, so I spent a couple of hours mucking around with the locals. Some of the children spent half an hour chasing the shadow of the kite, and ...

Visit to the walled city/fort of Fatehpur Sikri

... music. There are always people walking on the streets with cattle and dogs so travel is slow. We arrived at the fort and took a taxi into it (auto's were not allowed). As with the other forts, it was very magnificent and had space for 5000 concubines as well as entertainment for the emperor by playing Parcheesi using concubines rather than stones. "It is good to be the king"!!!. After spending a little over and hour at the fort, we left to go back to Delhi to catch our flight ...

Day 13: Taj Mahal, finally, and a train

... Cadbury's éclair. Obviously Cameron then perked up to such an extent that he had to test out the acoustics and echoes on the whole site - so while we were grateful, the rest of the visitors may have preferred a more peaceful scene to consider their tranquillity. Back to the hotel for a proper breakfast and time to say goodbye to Agra. As worthwhile as it is to see the Taj Mahal, we wonder if we will ever be back. As the car headed west to Fatehpur Sikri we trundled along miles of narrow ...

Fatehpur Sikri...a composite religion

In cammino verso jaipur

... morning to go on the bird tour with our host. We rode bicycles through the park. Along the way we came across an orphan deer which kept following us, he was a sweetie. The guide was very good at showing us where the birds where, as if by ourselves we would have just peddled right by them. When we got back to the guesthouse we had drinks and dinner with a German couple staying ...
