Arrived at this high city today, and proceeded to chew coca leaves, drink coca tea, and eat coca candy. It is supposed to help prevent altitude sickness. There is a prescription you can take, but since I am allergic to sulfur, it was not an option for me. So I immersed myself in coca. Just a note: If you are in a job that has drug tests, coca can appear in a urine test. Let your boss know where you are going and what you will be doing. It worked or at least I did not experience any symptoms. ...
Cusco, Peru travelingmaToday is the day to visit ruins. We first stopped at the Cristo Blanco, a large white Christ statue that is a replica of the one Rio. All along the way to Pisac, we encountered ruins. This area of Peru has hundreds of sites. We passed over the crest at 12,500 ft, to drop down to Pisac. Farmers terrace up the sides of the mountains to farm. We made an unscheduled stop to watch two men make adobe bricks - not to sell, but to use on their own houses. It is a mixture of clay mud, straw, cactus ju...
Cusco, Peru travelingma Today was to be the day to leave to go to Machupicchu. But the farmers had closed roads with rocks as well as the train tracks to Machupicchu. So OAT wisely decided to extend our stay in Cuzco. As it turned out, we thanked the farmers. It was the culmination of the Interrhymin (spelling?) Festival that began June 21 with the solstice. There are three parts to the festival, and we participated in the first two parts.
First we walked down to the the Convent of San Francisco on Sol Street...

Cusco, Peru astridenellen... pig?. Hmmm, now I was confused. Luckily our friendly waiter who was laughing at the gringos eating mad meat came over and offered to cut the beast into pieces for us, separating the head and body into 6 pieces. We set about tearing the luscious duck like meat from its scrawny litle bones and leather like skin and happilydevoured all we could find, including the spicy peppers filled with its entrails. A little salty, but beautiful. And no, I didn´t eat ...

Cusco, Cusco, Peru cusco21... and John when they flew to Lima and then home. Maybe not so sad for them as I think we were all exhausted after a few manic weeks, all of which were fantastic though. Kate and I were actually very envious leaving the airport after they'd gone. Not long to go though now, and lots of nice things left.
Cusco, Peru sethandkate... plane's microphone, announced the weather which promised to be sunny but not as warm as Lima. A jacket would be required. We were back in business BABY!

Hesitantly, I proceeded to follow all the other passengers out the airplane's door, then up the sky walk leading us to the terminal. Good, I was happy since we were not exactly outside. Breathe in, breathe out. I was able to do that without any ...
Cusco, Peru momentsintime... wait for the rain to end. Henry and the porters were wondering if we should camp there for the night, but we wanted to move on. After what seemed like for an eternity, the rain ended but only for a while. The guide realised that we still all had energy and we would all go on through the rainforest until our next stop. The trail descended down to the valley eventually leading into the rainforest. The others were all in front of me. I lagged ...
