Historical Traveler Reviews of John Hancock Hotel And Conferen Boston

Budget hotel, great location

from A TripAdvisor Member
A good budget hotel just steps away from Copley Place and the Back Bay Station. The rooms are very small, but for the price and location it was great. It was clean, which is an absolute MUST. The staff was friendly and helpful. No restaurant or other chain amenities, but lots of dining & shopping is just a block away. I would definitely stay there again.

Not perfect but a deal

from hailahh
I read some of the other reviews and one thing I noticed is staff was not always evident at the desk... but I always found one when I needed to by calling loudly.

The room was clean, I felt secure, my only complaint was that some pipe burst and there was only cold water the morning after my arrival - and I HAD to take a shower. Oooh, that was painful. The location - 1 block from the Nieman Marcus entrance to the interconnected series of malls and bridges that leads to the Hyatt Convention Center - was great, I saved megabucks over staying in one of those connected hotels, so even though walking that block was a cold, windy, slushy experience (January) it was worth it. I wish they'd had cereal for the Cont. breakfast but was happy to get something and go...

Absolutely fine & a great deal

We stayed at the John Hancock Hotel and Conference Center for one night on the 29th December. We had just arrived on a 6 hour flight from Reykjavik and had a hassle-free journey from the airport right to Back Bay station which is only a block or 2 from the hotel. At first we walked right past the hotel as the sign isn't huge (and it just says John Hancock Conference Centre on a modest black & white sign), but we got directions from the Copley Square hotel doorman and found our way back in a few minutes.

No problems checking in, and were directed to our room on the 5th floor. Really surprised at the size of the room - we thought it was huge! Big queen size bed, couch, coffee table, large TV, plenty of side tables and drawers, lots of lamps, and a nicely-sized bathroom. Things did seem slightly old fashioned, but not in a run-down way.

Breakfast was fine - bagels & cream cheese, muffins, some cereal, juice, tea & coffee. There was plenty there when we arrived, but by the time we left a few others had sat down and things were starting to run low - I don't know if this caused problems later or not (I remember other reviews saying they had problems with no more food being available).

The hotel let us store our bags in their luggage room while we explored the city (we had to catch a train out of Back Bay station later that afternoon so this was perfect for us), and we strolled around Copley Square, through Boston Common and to Faneuil Hall etc. Boston is such a walkable city, we really enjoyed it.

We booked our room at this hotel through their own website (---------------------) and paid US$77 including all taxes & breakfast for a double room, which was about 1/2 the price at others we looked at in this area. I thought it was just perfect, esp for the price.

No problems at all.

The hotel is centrally located to Copley Square, the fashionable Newbury Street, and only about a 15 minute walk to Faneuil Hall.

The staff were very friendly, helpful, and courteous. The room itself was absolutely fine. A nice size, the only thing you could really criticise is the bathroom which could have done with a bit of refurbishment, but at the same time, it was't bad at all!

For the price we paid, we have no complaints. Don't expect the Earth, but do expect a comfortable, well kept, tidy and very quiet hotel.

Quiet in the big city

This is an old hotel but the walls are thick and the doors are heavy! We did not hear a sound from any other rooms and very little street noise. For the price and location this cannot be beat.

Everything we needed; great location; very good price

from A TripAdvisor Member
Location is literally "around the corner" from Back Bay Station for the T and Amtrak. The room was comfortable, and included everthing we needed. The Continental Breakfast was fine. We will use this hotel again.

Helpful Staff, OK room

from A TripAdvisor Member
We made booking for this hotel through a well known internet hotel provider. Having just arrived from UK and struggled with luggage on T, we were none too impressed to find that hotel had no record of booking despite fact that we had paid internet company 5 months earlier. However, reception staff were really good and sorted it all out for us within 5-10 mins. Rooms were really ordinary but were clean and location was really good (plenty of nearby restaurants & bars within 5 mins walk). Good value for money considering location and breakfast included aswell (if you want it - and it was available after 9 whilst we were there!)

Lucky wasnt in room much

flight was good virgin always are got to the hotel me and my mate. booked a twin room reception said the twin rooms have gone we had a put you up bed and a queen bed in a little room and a hotel with no bar .

Happy, eventually!

After a nightmare journey through Phili Airport we arrived in Boston and made our way to Copley Square on the T. We'd been travelling all day from the UK and were tired and annoyed after it became apparant that Philadelphia Airport is just not organised in itself at all. So, we arrive at the John Hancock and just to round the day off nicely there is nobody on reception. So, we wait and wait (along with another group of people) and after about 30 mins of searching the hotel the reception guy strolls in. However, I have to say that after the initial problems the hotel was fine. The rooms were clean, spacious and secure.

There wasnt much of a view but then again you dont come to Boston to look out of your window! The continental breakfast was OK, although you arent gonna rush out of bed to make sure you get it. The location is spot on, 2 mins from Copley Subway Station and only 5-10 mins walk to Boston Common and beyond. The rates are reasonable and all in all I'd say if you're on a tightish budget then this hotel would be fine.

Not Again

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel room was clean, small but comfortable, and we had a good view. But for the complimentary continental breakfast, the food had run out an hour before closing and no one was in sight.
