... very touristy but it's been
done in quite a nice way. You know that the place it full of tourists
but because they're Chinese tourists it somehow doesn't feel as
demoralising. There are narrow alleys lit by lanterns with mountain
streams running down the middle of them. In other towns these streets
would be full of cheap food stalls but here they are packed with
classy bars playing live music with comfy chairs outside, oh and did
I mention the beer is cheap??
... we went to explore one of the surrounding buildings, unfortunatley for us this was more tea tasting.
As the Bai women handed around the first cup of tea she said something to make everyone laugh and me very nervous, Xi told me that she had said that if a drink the tea in the two gulps it would be very rude, three is just right and if I drink it in four I have to marry the women that had just poured my tea, unless she didnt want to of ...
... or 141 lbs (without subtracting for clothes and shoes). As I had imagined, Bill is losing and I am gaining. We walked through Old Dali starting at the South Gate on the pedestrian streets. To walk from the South to the North Gate is 1.5 kms. There are lots of places to spend your money - bakeries, restaurants (some have their menu on display - live fish and fresh veggies), cafes, dumplings, flat bread, fried potatoes, jewellery, traditional crafts and ...
Dali, Yunnan, China theresabill... and going trekking by hiring a guide from one of the agencies. Luang Namtha being the northernmost town seemed an ideal place to start.
"You may be able to get one from the border at Mohan. There are no direct buses from here."
"Let me think on it."
A Chinese guy with a hippyish mop of hair was busily engrossed in asking directions, using a map, from another member of staff. He couldn't help overhearing my inquiry.

... shopping before heading home. However we were told we were not going to leave until Sunday instead of Saturday. Everyone was disappointed. No break before work and we were beginning to miss families. Okay, it was just one day, but I take a couple to recover and I felt I'd seen enough of Kunming. The following morning Kim our guide said we could get an earlier flight - that afternoon! We had a minute to decide. Earlier or later? It was tough, but all ...

Dali, Yunnan, China stephfitzsmith... bloody ages for someone to get up to let me in! Sunday 13th April I got up early to try to change the date of my bus ticket and my reservation with the MCA guesthouse in Lijiang, which the girl at reception managed to do for me. I had exhausted my entire supply of clothes a couple of days before so after collecting them I had to completely repack my bag, which seems to be getting harder and harder to do each time even though I am not buying anything! I decided to move to ...
Dali, Yunnan, China mattislost... it soon became 50, 60 degree inclines of brittle, icy snow that would be break off and swirl around, caught on freezing gusts. Our only option was to cling on to whatever was around and wait, though there wasn't much to grab ahold of; hardy twisted plants, impressively still able to thrive at this altitude, provided the best hold; crumbling rock, less certain. Worse was when there was no option but to dig our hands into the snow, then spend the next ten ...
Dali, China mrconfused... man in China might be challenged! He would be staying with us for the rest of China and i would be sharing rooms with him. So when we Mr Zhong (pronounced Jong) said we would be meeting him in 5 minutes i was very anxious. We had arrived in New Dali (Shangguing), the main city near Wa Se that had been made in 50 years. It already looked outdated but was overwhelming how such as massive place had been farm fields. We jumped out the vanwagon, next to a school where Zhong ...
