The Three Gorges Dam

We flew from Shanghai to Wuhan and then the train to Yichang. Great to arrive as I've written about this place so much re the Japanese in The War of Resistance but never been before. We joined the cruise ship to what is known in the trade as a "scratch orchestra" playing "Oh When The Saints". Usually such an orchestra means one put together from people who don't usually play together but in this instance it had a more literal meaning. Very jolly though. A Chinese cruise ship ...

... check the rating on it in Canadian standards but there were scenes that were sexually explicit, extreme violence, and profanity used every few words. The afternoon movie was only in Chinese, with no subtitles, and didn't seem remotely interesting as I watched a few minutes of it. The next day ( Sunday for us) was a day of travel, departing our hotel at 6:30am for the two & 1/2 hr drive to Shanghai, then a 2 hr flight to Wuhan, followed by a 5 hr drive to Yichang. We boarded the ship about 9 pm that evening. Aboard the MS Yangtze 2, we are surrounded by tour groups from Canada, Germany, Taiwan. Indonesia and China. After a morning off, we boarded the bus for a tour of the Three Gorges Dam. This project which began in 1992 was completed in 2008 at a cost of ...

Zhongxiang: the cave, a tomb and intense chill

... 65 km outside the city. We haggled a price, and off we went. Maybe there are tourist busses going up there usually, we couldn't tell. Still, the price seemed reasonable, as long as you don't feel like you're being scammed.

A rollercoaster ride of a drive, and two hours later we've arrived. This is the most rural of China I've experienced so far, with chickens running about everywhere and something I believe to be buffaloes on the ...
