    ... than any green thing. Clean air must be one of the most discussed topics in China these days. It's highly valued. They almost never see stars in Mianyang, here they shine brightly in the crisp night air. Bamboo stalks are up to 12" wide and 50' tall, more tree than shrub.     ... Friday 10 p.m. on an older bus from Chengdu w/ bugs running around inside, but no biting or stings, they stayed on the floor. I loved looking at the passing farms, not so much the occasional grubby towns. I get energy appreciating how land can be well used. I guess I imagine living in one of the rural villages as Peter Hessler, who Chen says is the best, and others write about.

    Auntie Rachel and I had a day to explore in the big city of Shanghai.

    After breakfast we walked along the shopping street to go to place called People's Square. The shopping street looks much different during the day. At People's Square there is a beautiful garden and a lot of really cool buildings to look at. We walked around People's Square for a long time. I liked it very much.

    After dinner I had to try to pack once again to accomodate all the wonderful gifts given to me. It was rather difficult. I'm hoping that my experience in packing will help me to avoid extra charges tomorrow. It was a bit difficult to zip my suitcases...

    I am very sad to leave Nanxi, but am anxious for the adventure that awaits me in Shanghai.

    The first class was a third grade English class. It was a review lesson to prepare for an upcoming exam. The teacher incorporated many pictures and games to make the learning interesting for the students. The students were also very engaged in the lesson. This is something that is lacking the high school classes. They played a "hot potato" type game to review asking questions. ...
