Day 8 - Jour 8

Three Gourges Dam - Biggest in the World !!

... 000 tons the 100m. Pretty amazing stuff. This is all positive but as I went through in the Chongqing update there are some major negatives. To create the reservoir for 600 above the dam, the river level has risen 80 already and will go up another 20 meters in 2009. This has forced 1.3 million people to move from there homes. New towns and cities have been built in the area and many people, mainly the younger people, have been happy to move to a new ...

Worn out in Wuhan

Arrived in Wuhan after a very bumpy and smoky bus journey, got chatting to the locals on the bus, well it was more like sign language with a lot of nodding and smiling, and eventually found our hostel at around 12:30am, thanks to a really nice taxi driver. Checked in and just crashed for the night before our flight to Shanghai

pukey bus trip

... up the volume and pray it wasn't getting you in the back of the head. stopped off for 20mins at a godawful loo. then back on the bus for another 5 hours. most of the trip was on un made roads. either mud or potholes or muddy potholes if we were v lucky. more driving on the opposite side of the road (although, unlike last night when getting a taxi to dinner, there was no going the wrong way round a round about ...

Wuhan: Quick stop before Hong Kong

... at a hotel to ask without any luck, however at the next hotel we were more successful. They didn't know where it was either, but Claire had managed to find the number for it on the internet when we were in Chongying, so the hotel called them and got directions. Two minutes later we were there, checked in and heading to bed to catch up on some sleep. Again, I had a whole dorm room to myself; Wuhan isn't really a ...

Damn Dam

... with no English speaking guide. Getting off the boat and running into nothing but tour guides for the dam I was unsuccessful in tracking down a non-tour bus (I'm sure there was one somewhere though) but did manage to haggle a better rate on the dam tour which would then drop me off at the bus station on the other side to get to Yichang. Also met the 2 Swedes and the guy from Hong Kong on the same tour bus so at least there was ...

The damned yangzi!!!!

... found that if they really dont understand english at all you can say rude words to their face as long as you keep smiling!! Funny thing languages ehh :D The trip was pretty exhausting too, which sounds abit daft given that we were just sitting on a boat, but the chinese are soooo noisey ,around the clock too,I wonder do they ever sleep? I know we barely did for the 3 nights we were on the boat so now we are on dry land we have some sleep to catch up on, we really are crazy kids :D

... later then we thought we would get there. But Kainan's mom called on the cell (with a Riiing Global GSM card) and told us when we'd get there. Wuhan was probably the best two days I had in China. Kainan's family was very nice and pretty much didn't let us pay for anything. That is something I did not want or expect. But I didn't want to be rude and I did try to pay whenever I thought it was just too much. They drove ...

Cruising on the Yangtze

... retorts - 'no, only if it brings good luck'. The lower half of Fengdu is gradually being demolished because the damming of the Yangtze river will raise the water level there by another 40m or so. We see labourers demolishing concrete hi-rise buildings using just sledgehammers, and other workers scavenging the iron reinforcing bars from the rubble. In the hubbub of the tour groups, morning heat, and noisy street vendors, its a fairly depressing experience all in. Early afternoon we ...

Int**estingly both Cantonese and Mandarin are written with the same charact**s so even though these two groups can't und**stand each oth** when speaking they only have to write down what they're saying and the oth** will und**stand them p**fectly.
