    ... down landscape.
A group of Mongol origin people were outside a truck stop, cheering me on. They insisted to have tea and a meal with them. Later, already in full darkness, they escorted me to the hostel in town, helping and carrying my belongings, and even doing the talks for the nights booking.
The next day was a real good day to ride, much warmer, despite this, still very hard to go up and down the ...

We were driven to the Chinese boarder control. Everything was fine until we showed our "Return Home Permit" (the permit for Hong Kong/Macau residents to enter China) alongside with our blue HKSAR Chinese passport at the customs. It took them a long time to go through our documents. Everything was very slow, but smooth. We succeeded leaving Russia!

... the border station and again our passports are taken off us for an hour or so. We sit on the train, then our passports are given back and we are able to get off the train if we want. I did my first black market transaction - changed my leftover rubles into yuan! We have no idea why the train has to stop for 6 hours at the chinese border post too but it did!

12 hours later - we have crossed the border, travelled maybe 2 or 3 kilometers and its ...

    Life on the train

A travel blog entry by helenruththomas on Jan 04, 2011

So what is it like on the train? We travelled from St Petersburg to Irkutsk in Platskartny, which is 3rd class - open plan bunks, basically a dorm on wheels, its the equivalent of hard sleeper on Chinese trains. The bunks are organised in sections of 6 - 2 sets of bunks at right angles to the train wall, and one set of bunks parallel to the train wall (am sure trains don't have walls, but can't remember the word!) This is definitely a much friendlier way of travelling ...
