India - Bodhgaya

... in India I had not encountered a single fully booked hotel room and I think it goes without saying that at least some of these places had rooms. They just didn't have staff that wanted to be bothered from their sleep in the middle of the night to check me in. This is the sort of culture shocking willful incompetence I wrote about before. Eventually I let the rickshaw driver take me to some place he knew about and it turned out to be an absolute ...

Buddhas tree

... that surrounds the holy bodhi tree where Buddha formulated his philosophy of life. During one of the many raids of the area the tree was destroyed, though not before a sapling of the tree was taken to Anaradhapra, Sri Lanka ( I just missed seeing it in Sri Lanka by one bus stop). That tree continues to flourish, and a sapling of that tree was brought back to Bodhigaya and replanted on its original spot.

Pretty much any country with a Buddhist ...

Bodh Gaya - Enlightenment

We stopped off and stayed the night in BodhGaya and traveled the next day to Gaya, where Siddhattha Gotama meditated beneath a bodhi tree and attained enlightenment, to become Lord Buddha.

It's a beautiful place where we sat for just one afternoon and watched devoted Buddhists gather to meditate at the sacred spot under the grand old tree. Neither Mish or myself are Buddhist, but it didn't detract from our experience and we took pleasure ...

Bodh Gaya

... is the Bodhi Tree under which the Buddha spent 49 days of meditation. The tree is not original but according to local lore, it comes from the stock of the original tree. Under the tree is the Vajarshila, which is a red sandstone seat that marks the spot where the Buddha sat. it dates from the 3rd century B.C. There are a large number of young and old Buddhist Monks that have come to pay homage and to meditate. There are also many other ...

Friendly people in a nice town

... road at a time, a 100+ km road was all being worked on at at the same time. Apparently our travelling speed was hampered by failed suspensions on the truck making the drivers take a cautious line with rough patches. Given our late arrival the hotel had a meal waiting. Being one of the few who was camping I then at 1am had to setup the tent. I found out in the morning that something in the previous nights meal was not cosher ...

... place to eat. Then back to the train station where our next train was no surprise, late!! While waiting at the station, we ended up having a crowd of around 15 people standing around us, just staring. It was quite strange and became a bit overwhelming. Especially as it was about 42 degrees and with the crowd there no breeze reached us, so it became super hot. After about an Hour of people just staring Nae had had enough and stormed off leaving Shaun to chase her. Then after ...

Back to the north...

Well, I'm back in the north now, making my way back to Delhi to fly home a week on Thursday. Since my last blog we moved up through the centre of the country, going to Hampi and then to Hyderabad before a short flight to Kolkata. Hampi was quite an amazing little place, with 83 temples within a very small area. The landscape around the small town (more like a village) is something like Brimham rocks (for those who live ...

Driving along the Narmarda River

... Brahmin priest for money as I stared at the somewhat unremarkable lingum (this one was tiny!!!), the temple itself was nothing special. I got out of there as quickly as I could and wandered down to the ghats to watch people washing themselves and their clothes in the crocodile infested Narmarda River. Bare-footed, dirty children with the cutest faces made their way to the other temple or to school in some cases in their tatty uniforms (still no shoes) for a ...

Buddha's place of enlightenment

After Varanasi we went to Bodhgaya - which was a very nice place. We met up with Tumu - who is a friend of Mark - a friend who lives in Colorado - that was quite a coincidence. The mahabodhi temple is an amazing structure as you can see from the photos and it was very nice to walk around. When we first arrived at the temple who did I see but Dzigar Kongtrul and many of his ...
