Last minute shopping in civilisation
May 25, 2008

As we had booked the Cook Island trip from New Zealand, we had to fly back to Auckland to catch our flight out to Santiago in Chile. We had one day to get our final bits from the shops in the town, as we would now have 2 months in South America. We then boarded our overnight flight to Santiago, in Chile, where we would then have to change planes...

22/07/04 We left the ski field on a horrible wet cloudy day which was A-OK by us as we'd just enjoyed three of the most perfect days for our introduction to skiing and we had the goggle tan-lines to prove it. We both had pretty sleepless nights as we dreamt (or had nightmares where I was concerned) about ploughs, parallel turns and falls into ne...

01/07/04 It was the first of the month but sadly our last few hours in Australia as a 7.30am shuttle bus took us to the airport in time for our early flight to Auckland. It was a short hop across The Ditch to The Land of the Long White Cloud, but one that was going to be delayed due to a late incoming flight. Our 9.30am departure time was eventu...

Disappointing Experience

from BrisbaneYankee on 2006-04-18
After reading numerous reviews of various Auckland Airport hotels here on TripAdvisor, my wife & I decided to book at Jet Inn, and my wife contacted the hotel to make our booking directly with them.

After arriving AKL at 11:30PM, we stayed at Jet Inn Auckland Airport Hotel on Thursday, 13 April, to make our connecting flight to Queenstown on Good Friday morning.

Two of the key factors in deciding to stay at Jet Inn were the favourable ratings the hotel received from most TripAdvisor reviewers, plus the fact the hotel claimed to offer twenty four hour room service (which was confirmed to my wife when she made our booking).

After checking in to our Deluxe Room (which, like most reviewers have indicated, was indeed modern, clean, quiet, and comfortable - full credit to the Jet Inn for this), I phoned to order room service, only to be told that there was no chef on duty, one porter not two, and he was busy driving the shuttle bus, so room service was out of the question - at least until the porter returned and was able to prepare "something" for us to eat - at a time that could not be estimated.

To be fair and keep my review honest and accurate, I will admit that I got very agitated and angry with the receptionist, and asked if we could check out of the hotel and go elsewhere to stay for the night. Imagine my shock and disbelief when I was told "yes, but you will still be charged for the night here".

Needless to say, we went to bed hungry, and left the hotel as soon as possible on Friday morning.

We can't fault the quality of the Deluxe Room at Jet Inn, but were most disappointed with the lack of care and concern shown by the front desk receptionist when we complained that we were not receiving the level of service that we expected when my wife confirmed our room reservation.

NZ$170 per night was definitely NOT good value for money, especially considering the lack of service (there was none) and bad attitude.

To add insult to injury, NZ$16.50 for 187ml bottles of wine (the exact same labels which are available at Queenstown Airport for just $6.50) from the Jet Inn mini-bar is outrageous and unreasonable.

No food and no wine makes for extremely unhappy and disappointed TripAdvisor travellers.

Good choice for airport hotel

from 2TxTrvlrs on 2006-04-17
We needed to overnight in Auckland and picked the Jet Inn based primarily on location (a few minutes drive from airport) and services (mainly free 24-hour shuttle service). The shuttle picked us up within 10 minutes of our call and delivered us to the Jet Inn within 15 minutes. The room was a standard motel-type room -- clean and well-maintained -- but not very large. It suited us just fine (a place to crash at 1 AM). Buffet breakfast was OK and the usual fare (for Australia/NZ). For our purposes, we made the right choice and would do it again. It gets 4 bullets because of location, 3 bullets otherwise. But if I were touring NZ and staying more than one night, I'd look at other hotels.

Good airport hotel

from A TripAdvisor User on 2006-03-07
My wife and I stayed at the Jet Inn Airport Hotel for one night on a stopover between Australia and Samoa. We were looking for something reasonably priced, comfortable and convenient.

Having read through the reviews for a lot of the hotels near the airport, most of them sounded pretty grim, some verging on Fawlty Towers.

I'm happy to say that the Jet Inn fitted the bill perfectly. We stayed in a standard room for NZ$112. It was small, but clean and comfortable, which is all that was needed for 1 night. Check in was effortless and friendly and the shuttle bus efficient and convenient.

I'd definitely recommended the Jet Inn for somewhere to lay your head for the night.

Great food otherwise very ordinary

from A TripAdvisor User on 2006-01-15
Adequate room . We had a fantastic meal at the restaurant .. the lamb was out outstanding . The pool was little more than a wading pool . Excellent suttle service to and from airport . Watch there is a charge for every hour you stay beyond normal check out which I thought was quite cheap given the monies we spent at the hotel .

Great service

from dk10 on 2006-01-12
I looked at the other reviews, and I guess you do have to choose your room carefully. We passed through the older section of the hotel, and even the corridors of the new section were much more tasteful! Our room was very clean and comfortable, and the bathroom large.

We got picked up from the airport by a really friendly and helpful driver, within 5 minutes of calling the hotel. The check-in and check-out process were really smooth, which is to be expected of an airport hotel, but some of the best ones often goof up.

We kept the restaurant staff going way past their closing time (10pm, though they have an all-night room service), so we didn't see bright shining faces, but they were very friendly when waiting at our table. Given our appalling experience of restaurant service in NZ, this wasn't bad at all. The food was a mix of some good and some not so great stuff, but at 10 pm at night with an early morning departure, more than adequate. And we're vegetarian, so the options for us are always limited in any case.

Excellent for an airport hotel.

Great accomodation close to the airport!

from A TripAdvisor User on 2005-12-24
From the moment the reception desk answered the telephone, to the moment we left at 04h00 the next morning to get back to the airport, we could simply not find fault with this hotel.

Great location, especially since Auckland doesn't quite seem to have the same hotel facilities around the airport as one might expect of a major city with an international airport. Great food in the restaurant - the awards they have won, seems well deserved. (Fantastic lamb dish!!)

Simply put - I'll recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in lose proximity to the airport.

Choose your room category carefully!

from Kittie on 2005-11-25
If your budget is not too tight, choose a "Deluxe" category room (we paid NZ$162). These are in a new wing and are a quite different experience from the disappointing NZ$137 "Premier" room we had last time. Staff were friendly and helpful (with the exception of one morose woman on the front desk, who seemed to regard customers as unwelcome irritants!). Hyper-efficient free shuttle service to/from the airport.

Did we stay at the same hotel?

from fiorhi on 2005-11-17
Have just read the other two reviews and have to say we had a totally different experience. We were picked up at Auckland Airport at about 12.30 at night about 10mins after phoning the hotel by a really friendly and helpful bus driver and taken to the hotel where the front desk staff were also really nice-especially considering the hour of night! We were shown to our room which was fantastic! The bathroom had a walk in double shower and fluffy robes, the tea and coffee making facilities were fine, the room had two queen sized beds and a sofa, desk and flat screen TV. The room was quiet and two adults and two toddlers slept off the long flight from UK just fine! I cannot comment on the restaurant food because we did not eat at the hotel. As a stopover before collecting our car the next morning (used the shuttlebus to go back to the airport) I cannot fault the Jet Inn.

Avoid eating in the restaurant

from A TripAdvisor User on 2005-05-24
I agree with the previous review re the size of the room, and although the hotel itself was reasonably attractive and the staff were pleasant it definitely wasn't 4 star. The location means that guests have little option to eat elsewhere but the meal we had in the restaurant was appalling. What was described as a prime Angus beef steak, priced at NZ $33, turned out to be an inedible lump of fat and gristle. And the beef carpaccio had the smallest slivers of meat ever seen plus some of the ingredients were missing. We wouldn't stay there again.

Sad indictment on what constitutes 4 star in NZ

from A TripAdvisor User on 2005-01-22
This supposed 4 star hotel was recommended by the travel agent who had also set us up with a 4 star hotel in Kuala Lumpur that only cost $2 NZD more than the Jet Inn. Perhaps given the economic standing of each country its inevitable that the Jet Inn came across as a rip off after our KL experience.

For $138 NZD it was accommodation only at the Jet Inn (twin room on the way out 28 Dec & single room for me on the 20 Jan). In KL for $140 NZD a sumptuous buffet breakfast was available.

The dimensions of the Jet Inn room were mean. It was pokey. There was no wardrobe, but the open wall shelving unit contained a couple of coathangers. I wouldn't have thought a wardrobe - at least some doors on a cupboard - would be too much to expect for 4 star!

The best thing about the Jet Inn was that the staff running the shuttle bus and reception desk were attentive and friendly. The shuttle service dropped me off at the local 24 hour supermarket, enabling me to buy some food for dinner & breakfast as I totally begrudged handing over any more $$ to the management of the Jet Inn.
