Kololi, Gambia brisko... My pump didn't fit the valve so I flagged down a passing car. The bike was just thrown on the roof rack, next to a goat and I was driven 3km back to the last village I passed through. Without charge I was deposited next to 'Man with Tools' where the puncture was mended. After chatting and fixing I realised I had no chance of getting to my destination, so I threw the bike on one of the infrequent minibus and was driven the ...
Banjul, Gambia jnewcomb... festival marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. For the last 30 days, Muslims (i.e. most Gambians) have been fulfilling specific religious observances. The most obvious of these is fasting - no food or liquid should pass one's lips from sunrise to sunset - hard enough to do anywhere but a particular challenge in sub-saharan Africa. One of the main reasons behind this sacrifice is to help followers feel sympathy for those less ...
Banjul, Gambia sweet2thlh... of challenge to my views has created a v**y deep-rooted sense of what is right or even normal. During one class I got into what was a little more passionate of a discussion with my Human Rights professor on the issue of the rights of a minority groups in a culture, especially religious minorities, than I would have liked. As much as I do want to stand up for what I believe in, I do not want to do so simply for that little boost of pride that comes with righteousness, and most ...
Serekunda, Gambia adminor... the rainy season lasts from May until November so it wont be so hot" I remember boasting to people before I left. Did I take into account what this meant? Nope! The rain that greeted us into the country obscured the ridiculously disproportionate length of the runway which I'm told was built by NASA to provide an emergency landing site for their space shuttles should one ever be needed. The Gambia has only a few paved roads, but it does have a role in ...

I now have the mandate to cure people publicly under strict conditions that I have to abide by otherwise I pay the price. Now I have the mandate to publicly treat all the diseases on condition that the patient will be treated publicly. In fact, the first and the most important condition is that the person must be diagnosed by a medical practitioner or a medical ...

Cute but not going to do a Madonna or Angelina Jolie; me thinks The highlight, other than the village tyre episode, was visiting Dembos family village.
