Without a word from Jennie or I they were pushing the discussion further, keeping it on topic, building on each other's comments, and making summative conclusions. College classrooms full of American kids who've had the Socratic style drilled into them since middle school, who've expressed their views to the point of arrogance for years couldn't do ...
Serekunda, Gambia adminor... was the next place and one days ride away. Went to the Methodist school for the assembly. Met the headmaster and was invited in to talk to the children. I had to decline as I needed to get to Farafenni, a full days ride away. It never ceases the amaze me that the main route from one side of the country runs across two ferry crossings, each ferry only takes 3 cars and the service is hardly used outside the morning rush. The ...
Banjul, Gambia jnewcomb... end up. There are colorfully painted huts, overflowing exotic vegetation, visiting artists and volunteers lounging in hammocks, art hanging from every tree, decorating every floor, and generally giving a feeling of deliberate creativity to every inch and random beauty to the village as a whole. This week we got to do a lot to really cement different activities and connections here - working with a local special needs school (the only one in the entire ...
Serekunda to Tijuring, Gambia adminor... yourself, when you can see it living, breathing, and moving and sense the emotion and importance and urgency that a topic has to a person when it is their reality. I know I'm expressing this concept in very ambiguous, maybe unintelligible terms, but it is the impression I've had when encountering many things here, whether it is Griots, politics, religion, or art. In short, I guess I'm just reveling in a little bit more direct experience than I've had in the industrial model of school. If ...
Kanifing, Gambia adminor... known to sting unless provoked or in danger. Anyway, this was probably my favourite day of the holiday. I heard some British tourists whisper "There's Chris Packham", and I felt quite proud to be with him! Actually, he's a pretty amazing guy. He doesn't buy into the whole celeb/media circus, nor does he watch TV, despite being a TV presenter, and uses it only as a vehicle for communicating his enthusiasm, which he certainly has lots of. He does so much unpaid charity and ...
Kotu, Gambia laurajane... black market earlier!! im a toubub, whiteperson and this is shouted from most kids as we pass. Cute but not going to do a Madonna or Angelina Jolie; me thinks The highlight, other than the village tyre episode, was visiting Dembos family village. His uncle had died and Dembo will be working and unable to attend the final funeral rites to mark one month since his uncles death. I got to prctice my Mandinka greeting ...
