... Qatar in his limo with his flags of state flying on the car. Wow, I got to see his driver anyway as the car flashed past us.<br> What a day! Falcons, oryx, emus, ostriches, hyenas, rich Qataris, shopping centers, security guards, and now the emir's driver. It's been a delightful trip and now I am going to take a nap and wait for the time to leave for my 1:50 a.m. flight to meet my husband in Australia.
Doha, Qatar carpefeline... along the creek and shops close by and souqs and such. Qatar's is just a lovely band of very well watered grass along the shore and a nice concrete sidewalk. There aren't even many trees, maybe a few planted every 200 meters or so. <br> Turns out I am not totally alone. There is one man walking on the Corniche but he moves from each small palm tree oasis to the next and then sits in the shade before ...
Doha, Qatar carpefeline... this has not been the case. <br><br>I borrowed a co-workers at lunch and drove to the nearest IBQ branch about 15 minutes away. Just inside the entrance is the ticket machine that spits out numbers so that everyone in served in turn. Beside the machine is a greeter/receptionist much like the banks back home - or at least like the CIBC branches I used to go to. I explain to her that I would like to open a new account ...
Doha, Qatar beyondwpg... he came from Bahrain and received his Qatar license by showing his Bahrain license and this should be the same for his Canadian friend here. The officer replied;<br><br>"Bahrain? You need to take lessons"<br><br>Clearly a language barrier here that we are not going to break anytime soon. Mary arrives and calls my cell asking where we are. Turns out we’re in the wrong building. I should have gone into the building with the kitchen through the doors on ...
Doha, Qatar beyondwpg... of the sudden she popped little roller balls out of her sneakers and started gliding along the floor, not a care in the world. Would she soon be covered too? A little boy sat driving the fake blue car attached to the front of his mother's shopping cart, like any little kid in any supermarket in the States. Only his mother's face was covered by a black veil. How does he feel about the fact he cannot look into his mother's eyes in public? We saw a number ...
Doha, Qatar jimmyandkristenA long journey to leave Africa on our way to India, sees us stopped in Doha airport for 14 hours!! Luckily we have been allowed to leave the airport for only 20 of your British pounds, fairly reasonable except Victoria then dragged me (Ian and Nobby) around a shopping mall ;) Lots of ...
Doha, Qatar ianvictoria... in the morning. Then, around noon, everything closes down (shops, banks, government agencies, etc.) and the local rush hour occurs (we were initially baffled by the fact that the traffic is worst at 1-2 pm and rather light at 5 pm). After that, at about 4-5 pm everything comes to life again and after dark the real life begins. Not that the heat is much better but at least one deals better with the Ramadan fasting this way (during Ramadan, Muslims eat no ...

Doha, Qatar bigjo... had been in town already for a few days attending meetings for a Canadian government aid organization, so she was able to help me find one of the more famous restaurants in town, "Mercury's", named after the late Freddy Mercury of the band Queen, who was born in Zanzibar. At the restaurant, we shared a tolerable, if small and overpriced pizza - and a very bland dish of pasta. I have the feeling that getting food is going to be an issue in Zanzibar. Sharon and I also spoke ...
Doha, Qatar bangkokrandy... and told me the way. When I asked him about taxis, he informed that there is no taxi in Umm-Said. He also told me that the gate of the industrial area is around 3 Km from the market. Finding no alternative, I started to walk to the area. Luckily it was winter and the weather was below 40 degree C. on the way I have seen the residential quarters of the staff, the grand mosque, Fire depot. I saw some trucks and ...
