... for having an EU Rail pass, usually it's around $180). I thought it was going to be around $50 or 60 at the most. When you suddenly and unexpectedly have to give up a large sum of money for something that you originally thought was going to be much cheaper, it comes with a feeling that is similar to being punched very hard in the stomach. I don't know where these swiss get off charging such exorbitant prices for everything. I paid for the ticket anyway ...

... as it was I could not see very much. Sitting right by the window and waiting as we revolved for the perfect photo might have been good but one had one little thing to remember. After taking a photo one had to remember to put their camera onto the table and not the window ledge as if you did put it onto the window ledge you may shortly find it missing.

Postscript: From previous experience Jeannie was a little apprehensive about the border crossing into Switzerland and sure enough we were pulled over and our boot opened. Jeannie's rusty German may have been the only thing that saved us having to open all our luggage - and we were especially relieved when we saw another vehicle apparently being put on a hoist for inspection underneath. The Swiss do take it all quite seriously...

... it was quickly followed by a rise of about 4m so this made the skiing a bit unpredictable. The actual snow conditions were very good with well groomed and slightly hard snow making the actual turns easy. I managed to meet the rest of the family before they reached the restaurant, although I did not beat the train up the hill.

Armed with sandwiches, cameras, and water we planned for about five hours of hiking. To save money on trains, we planned a circuit that required us to take the train to Wengen, and we would walk from there. The whole circuit was split into three separate hikes. One from Wengen to Mannlichen, Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg, and back down to Wengen. To get to Wegen, we took a train to Lauterbunnen, the main town in the valley.
