Beer fest!

Today we were unable to go to the lavender fields like we had planned, so we improvised. Sapporro being the beer capital of Japan, we headed to the beer museum. Fascinating though it was, we were still below Japan's drinking age and therefore felt a little left out of the festivities. The beer museum was adjacent to a crazy huge shopping mall and we needed some lunch, so we decided to head in. We grabbed some ...

Hokkaido

I came to Sapporo last year with my friends. On the last day, I went to visit the Ainu museum in Shiraoi by myself. Since then, I got in the PhD program, and I am focusing on the indigenous issues. Ainu culture is such beautiful. I got so much interest in their culture since then. This time, I came to Sapporo to meet up with more people. Haruzo from Kimitsu had me connect with Nanako. She's a graduate student at the Hokkaido University. We talked on the phone. She ...

The 100 Yen Post

We're in Sapporo now and it's absolutely amazing. However the hostel is charging ten yen per freaking minute to use the internet - which adds up to roughly $10 AUD an hour. So there won't be any further posts until we reach Tokyo again in another three days.

Missing you all,
Tom and Rachael
Adventures in Hokkaido, Month of Gluttony

... sudden change of altitude combined with so much physical exertion. *Note to self:start working out before you climb Mt.Fuji next summer!* Once we made it to the summit, the exhaustion I felt from the ascent quickly disappeared as we looked out over an endless sky of clouds and beautiful green snow-capped mountains. It was definitely worth it! Although I maybe wouldn't pick something like this to do again on my birthday, in retrospect it was a pretty cool way to ...

... nice however, we passed by the sea for most of the journey, mountains dominated the other side. The train was ridiculously hot though. It was a relief to get out the other end. We got straight into our next train also ridiculously hot and spent a further 3 hours getting to Hachinohe through the tunnel to the north end of Honshu. The lack of leg room in the train started to hurt my knees. At ...
