Survived the night without any rain – have been very lucky in that regard. Did all the usual, before driving the 2 kms to the Russian border just south of Nida on the Spit just to have a look. Kaliningrad is Russian's smallest territory, but apparently, according to our Lonely Planet guide book, "has all the traditions of the big parent, alongside plenty of fine hotels, and restaurants, welcoming locals, beautiful countryside, splendid beaches ...

When Spring arrives, and nature starts to bloom, Latvians hit the countryside. First in March to tap some birch juice, and then in the weeks leading up to Midsummer to gather herbs for tea. The last church for today was St Katrina's church which is the most important in the town. St Catherine is also on the back of the Latvian 1€ and 2€ coins. We were in for a treat here as the choir was rehearsing! Across the minor river we visited the Livonian Order Castle and Museum. The castle hardly exists anymore but the museum is in the ...

Admittedly it would be hard to beat the fantastic Ventspils tourist office, but Kuldiga does not even try. The girl at the desk looked annoyed to have been interrupted from her email, although she answered our questions satisfactorily. Kuldiga has the widest waterfall in Europe at 249m, also possibly the lowest at 2m but they don't put that in the brochures. We were lucky enough to find a hostel where the view from the sofa in ...
