Jim & June's Odyssey 091121 - Chattanooga, TN

... mile panoramic view of Chattanooga, the Tennessee River and surrounding valleys.

· Ruby Falls – An elevator takes you down 260ft, then you walk about 1/2mile through colorful stalactites, stalagmites, columns, drapes and flowstone caves before reaching a waterfall IN the mountain where the water falls from a hole in the ceiling 1100ft below the mountain top. Nobody knows where the water ...

A tent with 4 walls (aka a wooden cabin - yay)

... You can eat and sleep on board. Whilst heading to the Choo Choo we saw a local brew pub so we stopped by and had a local brew and pizza for lunch. It had great atmosphere and was orginally an old warehouse that had been redesigned. It made us a little homesick but last night we stopped by a World Foods Maket that we happened to see as we drove by and they had Mint Slice biscuits, Tim Tams, Crunchies and Turkish Delight. All of which we now ...

Chattanooga, the Hub.

We have arrived in Chattanooga and found ourselves a bargain basement priced little wooden cabin to keep us out of the rain and in the warmth, yay! This is just a short entry. This week we will be staying here in Chattanooga checking out the surrounds and making a few day trips to neighbouring states.

We will keep you updated. Lots of Love, the warm, Bek and Jesse Train

Visiting the Battlefield - Chickamauga NP

... There must have been issues with that particular system since it didn’t seem to catch on right away.

We were just getting to the other side of the gun exhibit when we were invaded by a middle school. Yikes. Peaceful calm erupted in chaos. Some of the more mature students tried to quiet the others by 'shushing’ them but it really didn’t work. We went through the second half much faster than the first ...

Arriving in Georgia

On the road again. I'm heading down to Tennessee for the University of Tennessee (UT) game versus the University of Georgia (UGA). I haven’t been to a UT game at Neyland Stadium since 1997. I’m dragging my friend Al along since he doesn’t like UGA and will actually go to an UT game with me.

We get dropped off at Newark airport which is nice since parking is $15/day in the 'economy’ lot. The lines are not too bad for a ...

Chickamauga, TN

From Marietta we took Hwy 41 North. Met for Breakfast @ the WH in Cartersville. Took Hwy 136 to Hwy 151 to Hwy 95 to Hwy 27 North. 27 North runs into the Battlefield.

On Hwy 136 we took a detour to Johns Mountain. It is a left turn from 136 North and is well marked. We drove to an overlook via a gravel road that was probably 2 1/2 miles. Not a ...

Jamie, Zach, and I can now say that we have done what all the barns and bird houses across the southeast has been requesting people to do: See Rock City. Rock City is a Labrinth of rock formations on the highest peak in Tennessee. From one spot we could Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee. Zach enjoyed looking at the rocks that loomed overhead and the massive waterfall.

Cherokee National Forest... Day One

... tried to navigate the second stream (only getting about five yards in before turning back), hiked back to the gate, got in the car and drove to destination number two. I'll have to have a little talk with that ranger... wouldn't it be just my luck that I was in the wrong place? I'm determined to find that swimming hole, so I may be making a second trip to the Cherokee National Forest before the summer is over. I want my swim!!

Next time... Destination Number Two -- the fog sets in.

Cherokee National Forest... Day Two

... gets very quiet and peaceful. Sounds are muted and colors are softened. It's one of my favorite forces of Nature.

And, since it was foggy, and getting late, I made camp in a little pullout (previously used by campers or hikers as a campsite), set up my tent, took a few more photos of the fog, the trees, and the wonderful forest sunset, and called it a night.

Next...
Day Three. I finally find Paradise!

Cherokee National Forest Overview

... You may remember the Ocoee as being the
whitewater rafting site of the 1996 Olympics... and if you're a bit
older, you'll remember it from the movie Deliverance -- insert theme music here).
I spent four days and three nights in the forest in search of those
little backroads that would take me to some of Mother Nature's best
kept secrets. Because I only allowed myself such a short time to
explore over 22,000 acres of recreation area and national ...
