... time to visit Anoki - new tops for christmas - really lovely hand printed cottons and so cheap by our standards- will wear them tomorrow (Tailor made clothes from Madurai was a entertaining experience but sadly the clothes I had made were awful !)

... didn't see the real thing, which apparently takes 12 hours for one performance. My guided tour of the so-called monuments took about an hour. You see St Francis Church (built by the Portugese in 1503, India's oldest European church) which includes Vasco de Gama's grave (though his remains were removed to Lisbon after 14 years) and the Mattancherry Palace Museum (built for the Kings) with impressive 16th century murals.

... costumes and make up, and perform scenes from the Ramayana. Their eye movements alone are incredible. We also went onto one of the Chinese fishing nets, where the fishermen showed us their catch, one of them insisting on shoving a fish in Hannah's face, which she was none too pleased about!

We also took a day trip on an old rice barge through the backwaters, were fed a traditional Keralan lunch which was delicious, and then had a 2 hour punt ...

... of his shirt, beckoning him to step backwards away from the snake and the angry elephants. The trainers scooped the snake up on a stick, tossing it out into the water and away from the antsy elephants.
After about 10 minutes the trainers were finished bathing the elephants and they started heading away from the river. A very large, much older elephant came up from the deep part of the river and we were offered a picture. This time we were not surprised ...
