Phitsanulok

My all female group consisted of two American and two Kiwi girls all in their late 20's plus three 18 year old girls from London. None of us spoke more than a couple of words of the local language so fortunately our tour guide 'Oam' was Thai. She was in her mid 30's but you generally can't pick the age of these people. The long distance trains in Thailand are air conditioned which was a relief given the extreme humidity of this region. The ride is quite comfortable and they serve you coffee a...

bye bye Pai

wow.. what a day or two... Well we sadly said goodbye to Pai on the 21st in the evening. we were supposed to catch a bus to Mae Hon Song at 8 am that morning but things didn't work out for us as Jacek barely touched the ground to turn off the alarm when it rang. I didn't open an eye again until 7:50 when it was too late, so we went back to sleep and had a lazy last day in Pai. Jacek got his ear pierced and we wandered around until 3 when we hopped on the bus to Chiang Mai. We arrived at about...

Sukhothai - Lots more Wats

Another bicycle trip with a sore bottom and lots of wats - back to wat mood again!! slightly different from Angkor Wat though. enjoyed the historical park on bicycle - the road is much improved in Thailand, and everywhere is relatively clean. Ben has managed to kill his bike so that we decided to run away quickly after returning the bikes. oops, won't come back to the same lady tomorrow. too hot to stay outside for long time, so came back and had a swim. a museum and more wats to go tomorrow,...

Sukhothai - more temples

... a narrow road beside the river, off the main road in New Sukothai. It has a pleasant garden and a large shaded area with tables and chairs. There is a real family atmosphere with staff of all ages including the new baby, at the centre of lots of attention. The dogs are also part of the scene. Our accommodation is in a ‘bungalow’ but I confess it looks more like an upmarket shed to me (although it still lacks hand-pulled Leeds Best; I can give them a few ...

Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary

... was the vision of this extraordinary young couple, Katherine, and her husband Anon. In 2005, Katherine founded BLES to provide a home for endangered, abused, and injured elephants. The genesis for BLES, the story of little Boon Lott, a two year old elephant that Katherine cared for until he sadly died up in Lampang, at TECC, is very moving. You can read about that on the new website, (www.blesele.org) so I won't retell it here. Katherine founded Boon Lott's Elephant ...

... to eat. We were not sure if we were supposed to eat the inside or the outside. The outside was papery and the inside was like a little rock. She sat there and happily crunched away while most of us tried to discreetly get rid of the thing in our mouths. I think one guy was able to eat his but his face was so disgusting looking I didn't take an offer for another rock nut. We made it back to town and started walking back to our hostel and stopped to try and buy some ...

Sukhothai & Chiang Mai

... was 900B (my book is 4 years old) and they only had a double bed for one night or I could have had a room with twin beds. As I didn't want a small bed, especially above the price range that I was looking for, I decided to move on. At this point I should mention that I am on a budget and I was going to start watching my money from now on. I got a tuk-tuk and had him take me to a guesthouse that he recommended. It's called Rux-Thai Guest House ...
