... lot of agriculture on the island and it's famous in Japan for giant turnips and mandarins amongst other vegetables. We have a couple of stops but where there is a photo opportunity the bus driver stops or slows down so we can get photos. The last stop is a lava park. It's quite incredible. ... trying to work out what I'm going to do when I get somewhere. The lady at information says to follow the tram tracks so I ignore this and follow the river. I go past some "birthplace of" people they are clearly proud of but I have no idea who they are. They've gone all out on tourist information even though there's very little to see. The river gets me no where so I admit defeat and ask for directions. He (and his wife) google maps it, goes on and on in Japanese before ...

... and takes about twenty minutes by ferry to get to. The volcano has thousands of small eruptions every year, all though these rarely result in flowing lava. When we arrived on the island we decided to hire some bikes and cycle the 6km trip to the viewing point on the side of the volcano. ... boat is dashing away. Would have to shop for new cap and goggle later in the afternoon mall shopping trip. Left my beloved silicon cap and YMCA side snap goggles by the pool outdoor shower last night, 10 min later they were gone. Lost & Found was no help!

... as it joined up to the mainland in the 1914 eruption ( on the east side so it still looks like an island and you need to get a ferry to go to it from Kagoshima). It has 3 main peaks, the main one being Naka-dake at 1060 meters but only the south one (1040 meters) is active. Luckily for me climbing is prohibited!!!!! I was able to take it easy - do a leisurely bus ride to the lookout points and then a bike ride around part of the island. A nice afternoon.
