... miles and the blue sea gently lapped the shoreline. There were bright blue skies ahead of us over the sea and dark clouds behind over Auckland which made for some dramatic photographs! The plants and trees surrounding the beach are really prehistoric looking, it almost felt like a dinosaur would come walking out of the forest at any moment! There were lots of tiny mussels all over the rocky parts of the beach and large rock pools awaiting to be washed ...

Finished the dive and then drove back to Auckland - our hostel was in a great suburb called Ponsonby surrounded by bars and restaurants so had a cheeky drink and a some Laotian food before turning into bed.

... of all though was the sweep of the Milky Way across the sky, the density of which became even more pronounced through the binoculars, with hundreds of stars visible from any one viewpoint.
It had been an exhilarating show, but the clear sky was dropping the temperature, and the dew, on the ground. So after some successful photographs of the stars and Milky Way (Priya suggested using the self-timer to minimise movement), we snuggled up into bed, most grateful for the fan ...
