Grand Turk

We arrived in Grand Turk and we were surprised at how flat the island was. We had read about Hurricane Ike hitting this island and causing a great deal of damage, but would see first hand just how bad it was. The water and the beaches looked quite lovely, but we could already see some signs of the destruction from the ship.

There was a single dock at one end of the island for ships to moor at. At the end of this dock was a group of shops, restaurants and bars and a ...

Grand Turk....??

OCTOBER 29, 2008 DAY 34 GRAND TURK....just one more sea day! Back in the 60's or 70's...I think...the folks of the Turks & Caicos Islands seriously considered joining Canada rather than take their own independence from the British. They didn't...and that's all I know about Grand Turk...the main island and government seat for the Turks & Caicos! I'd probably know more about Grand Turk if we had made our scheduled port call ...

... Margarita and I had a Pina Colada). We then headed to the beach area with a buzz and took a ton of awesome photos. Everything in this area was perfect...new, clean & safe. Back on the ship, had the birthday dinner at the specialty Sterling Steakhouse...that was one good filet mignon. Headed off to the comedy show in the theater and up to Skywalkers lounge for a birthday Spaten Beer and a Mucho Mango while listening to 80's hour. San Juan here we come.

... hand-woven baskets and hats are beautiful, very well done, but I just didn't see anything that I would use. There is the funkiest 'found objects' art you've ever seen. The guy has an amazing imagination, but it would never fit into my décor! At any rate, I wanted to buy something, if only to support the crafters, but nothing caught my eye. Anyway, dropped off car at airport, easy as pie, just park and give the key to a guy in the booth. Hade lunch at the ...

Grand Turk was ok. Not a place I would choose to go back to. The port is very tiny (as is the island) and very nicely done and there is a very nice beach right there. We did a kyaking and snorkling excursion that was not too great - I think the best thing to have done here was just head to the beach and enjoy the beautiful blue water and soft sand.

... and soda/snacks. Most Secluded: Low, cliff-edged Bluff Point Beach is located just west of the lighthouse; in the spring and summer, you might even spot flamingos here. Little Bluff Point Beach is on the northern coastline of Grand Turk. This beach is covered with gorgeous seashells and is edged by a limestone cliff, providing a panoramic view of the beach's shallow waters, mangroves, and exotic birds that frequent the beach in the summer and spring ...

The Honeymoon!

Our trip is now so long ago that I hardly remember it! Actually, the most memorable parts were underwater, snorkeling, and we don't have any pictures of that. Or they were inappropriate to share publicly (or at all). I DO remember the lovely views, and the gorgeous ...

... took a boat ride where we got a chance to see more of the beautiful waters of T&C. This took us for snorkeling as well as Pine Cay for shelling. We found some beautiful Conch shells here as well as one sand dollar. Too bad it didn't make the trip back. They are just so fragile. Next, was Sapodilla Bay, with it's calm, shallow water and Chalk Sound where the water is ...

Grand Turk

We pulled up at the Grand Turk pier at 7am, just as promised. Did you know that Grand Turk Island is named after a type of cactus with a red fez-like top that inhabits the island? Thus the name. It was windy but sunny and after a quick breakfast, we headed down to the gang plank and went ashore around 8am to check in for our "Bike, Hike and Swim" tour. We found a bunch of big, old-fashioned Schwin-type bikes with coaster ...

At long last...

... thunder is right overhead and the wind and rain are relentless! So far we've had two sets of visitors- my Mum, Dad and Sister and Marge!! Sadly we don't seem to be able to get too much time off when people come here but it all seems to work out - everybody seems to have really enjoyed themselves so far. It's a pretty lazy time when you're here. Not too much to do except sit on the beach - swim in the sea - visit some bars - and of course go diving... Bye for now Caz (and Wiz) x
