Day 46 Sagola, MI to Perronville, MI Mile:2,456

I jolted awake from my fitful night at 5 a.m. to the roar of the loggers hurtling down Route 69 to Escanaba, MI, the lone road that traveled the 60 miles to tonight's destination. My heart raced and my gut twisted into a pretzel as I had flashbacks of last night's nightmares, spawned by yesterday's close encounters with the big rigs. I was torn by my goal to ride across every inch of the USA and my fear of the trucks. Should I ...

It is hard to believe that we left Hiawassee 3 weeks ago today. The days are flying by and this trip is all we had hoped it would be. We left Sturgeon Bay WI yesterday and arrived in Rapid City, Mi. Will be here total of 2 nights. Need to catch up on Sturgeon Bay: It was cool during our visit and a couple of nights we cracked the heat on. The local folks are still waiting for their summer to arrive before fall starts in September. Despite the severe winter ...

Sounds suitably creepy for the season, doesn't it? I finally learned how Door County got it's name. Door County is a peninsula that juts up into Lake Michigan and creates, on its west side, Green Bay (of Packers fame). Off the tip of Door county is an island, Washington Island. Apparently the waters between the peninsula and the island are particularly treacherous and home to many a shipwreck. This earned it the moniker 'port des mortes', or Death's Door, ...

Today was forecasted to be overcast. Indeed when I woke at 5am, rain was pouring outside, so I went back to sleep. 6:19am, bluebird day. Once again I packed, frustrated that I may have missed some prime riding time, and hit the road. I arrived in Gladstone and took a dip in Lake Michigan. There is barely any grade here in the lake, so I walked out 100 ft until the water was at my knees, gave up, and belly flopped into the warm water. ...

... the coast of Lake Michigan. The lake is so vast that you forget that it is a lake. We are now staying in Gladstone on Little Bay de Noc MI. The campground is right on the water and is mainly occupied by families from the lower part of the state. They are all very friendly and as soon as they see that we have FL plates want to tell us where they stay in FL. We have been getting a kick out of how everyone uses the phrase you betcha eh. Something like y'all come back ...
