The Eagle has landed

... not at all as we had been assured in e-mails etc., and without further ado, we left the boat in the morning. Well we are old enough and sensible enough not to have to put up with discomfort and hardships for eight to ten weeks!

We discovered this was not the first time that Mike and Lola had experienced crew jumping ship. Mike asked us not to panic the others as he had found; 'once one leaves, they all leave'.

Second Last stop....

Cagliari

Got the overnight boat from Palermo to Cagiiari which is in Sardenia. Still part of Italy. Was a bit of a nightmare journey. Decided to opt for the cheaper sleeper seat instead of the cabin this time. Was quite difficult to get comfortable in and sleep. Just a cushioned seat. Whomever was in charge of the air conditioning put it on sub zero. Outside it was like 30 and inside it was minus zero. I was in shorts and t-shirt.

There was some ...

The storm

We're woken by thunder and heavy rain this morning – a storm is in full force and its right overhead. Forks of lightening strike in the courtyard outside the room and illuminate the gap under our door, thunder booms above us, then rolls around the valley. Neither of us are keen to get up, so we snuggle back down and listen to the rain pounding on the roof above us. The electricity has been taken out by the storm, so when we finally decide to make a move ...

City under the sea

... beauty of its own. We found our way onto a dirt track again and pulled up into a bay where we sat and read and watched the sea in silence.

When we decide to make our way back we stop at the supermarket for more picnic supplies. The sun goes down around 7.30pm at the moment here and we were close to an area near the monastery where you can get down to the sea, so we sat there and ate our picnic and watched the sun go down.

Which way?

... to find our way down to a deserted cove at one point, where we stopped for a drink break for a while, but eventually we had to accept that we were beaten and head back on the path to the beach.

We walk back along the beach, past where we originally joined, to the other end to see if we could get any more joy that way. After clambering across the rocks this end, we come to another sheltered cove, but again no way of going any further – so we decide ...

A river too far

... in the afternoon. We decide to go in search of a late lunch, so we drive along the coastal road and see a sign to a café/restaurant/art gallery – so we pull in, phrase book in hand this time. We end up being in there quite a while as we chatted and amused ourselves with the morning’s events, had dinner then the most delicious chocolate crepes, followed by coffees. Incidentally, with the help of the phrase book, I’ve now discovered what the waiter was ...

Not all roads lead to Rome

... 8211; he’s easy to keep happy – a man of simple needs, but he turns into a monster if not fed!!

We come across a small pizzeria, so we pull up and go inside – this is where I remember reading before we came that the south of Sardinia does not yet have a beaten tourist path – certainly not for English speakers and right now our phrase book is sitting, rather uselessly, at the bottom of our luggage in the boot of the car. I ...

The Italian Job

The main reason for people to go on vacation is primarily to relax and escape their normal lives. Oddly enough for online booking for hotels, you quite often see advertisements offering "free wifi" along with the general amenities for a simple room. Just imagine a typical American plunging him or herself on a semi-desert island with no wifi and no mobile service! I bet that internet access would be the first thing they would look for, if they already don't have ...

Pizza, Pasta & Parents

... just enough and even though it was delivered at weird times it didn't spoil a really nice meal. Even if the prawns did work out to be $10 NZ Dollars EACH! 12th May - Pula to Villasimius After eating our Italian breakfast (which always consisted of Crossiants and Biscottie) we drove around the coast through Cagliari to Villasimius. We made a quick toilet stop and this is where Cesca realised that her bum was wet! No she hadn't peed herself the juice Granville had ...
