Eleftherios Skilos (Free Dog)

... better off kept, than living free? No wonder Greece is embracing socialism. You all want the government taking care of you from the cradle to the grave." The Greeks have witnessed my debating style previously and don't jump up and beat me to a pulp. I continued the dog debate with my Greek coworkers. "Its August," I said "vacation month in Athens and we will see more abandoned dogs as vacationing families leave their dogs to fend for ...

Fall Break in Greece

Fall Break Trip to Greece: Saturday October 25th: Athens On Saturday we left for our fall break trip to Greece! We had to first take a train to Milan and then fly out of Milan to Athens because it is harder to get cheap flights out of Florence. So we took a three hour train to Milan and then a two hour flight to Athens. When we got in we took a bus and checked into our hostel. The man at the hostel was very nice and he gave us ...

... but trees are not. Finally, what we call the "Greek key" pattern is actually called a Greek meander. Here's a picture of a real Greek key, with holes bored into it in varying depths instead of notches taken out of the side. Hope that was good, Godiva. No word yet on what Greek keyboards look like, as you asked me to find out. All the women who administer the program type on English-letter keyboards. Let me know in the comments if there are any other details you want me to investigate.

Athens Redux

... Athens, so we had a lot to squeeze it. We went to the Kerameikos Cemetery first thing in the morning, in theory before the heat became oppressive, but the heat was already overwhelming even then. We managed to keep going. We were interested in the Dipylon Gate, the main entrance to Athens in the Classical Entry but Karen was continuously moved by the scenarios portrayed on the grave stellai. Around noon, we got to the National Museum where my friend ...

... they follow your every step and ignore all atempts to be left alone. At this one store there was a girl trying to sell us everything including her kitchen sink, and when Wendy and I went separate ways she looked perplexed and didn't know who to follow. The rest of our time in Athens was spent climbing a few of the hills and exploring the non touristy areas. When we went up one of the hills we were followed by a dog for over 45 minutes. Apparently these dogs usually stay by your side and ...

Olympia to Athens

... we made a visit to another ancient site at Myceania to view 4,000 year old ruins some of which were in exceptional condition, then on through to Corinth for our lunchtime stop next to the incredible deep Cornith canal dug during the 1800's allowing large ships to pass through from one sea to the other saving more than 200 miles of the journey to Athens.

The City of Gods and Goddesses

... being able to sit and relax while I did a couple of loads, but the reality was much more traumatising. I wasn't allowed to do it myself, I had to hand my dirty underwear over to a brutal elderly greek woman in black donning rubber gloves. I threw an extra pair of socks on to the pile when I thought she wasnt't looking but I got caught and she shrieked "No! Now you pay more! Two load!" In utter indignation I took the socks back and left in a huff. I found the hotel where I ...

All Good Things Must Come To An End

... it was a relatively steady incline to get to the Parthenon. Since it was a warm day today, I knew this wasn't going to be easy. We got our ticket which also provided us with entrance to a few other sites around town. The views of a hazy Athens started to come into view the further we climbed. Our guide continuously stopped to give us some information on the history but I was too consumed with trying to stay cool to pay attention. The final steps leading to the top of the ...
