Serendipity

... this sort of feeling, and many people find it as empowering.

I spent the day today at the Civic Engagement Poster session in Iowa City, trying to network the Bplans project and Red Voluntario research to needy volunteers. From the feeling of things, I think people got pretty excited. Of the 20 people that I was able to talk to, 18 gave me their emails for further information.

Only 6 more days until our flight to RIO DE JANIERO!

Thank you everyone for your support!

Beeline to Iowa

Our timing was amiss for the Black Hills and The Badlands. The Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, held the first week of August, posed numerous challenges to our originally planned route across Wyoming and South Dakota via I-90. As far away as 400 miles from Sturgis, we encountered groups of bikers along the road and found small towns like Cody, Wyoming, completely booked. Albeit reluctantly, I did eventually let go of my hopes for a visit to Devil’s Tower, Mount ...

Off to Grandmas house we go.

... woodworking skills and make fantastic rocking chairs, Bek tried a few out and it was hard to get her up. They also weave their own wool and other fabrics and make fudge. It was a beautiful community full of shops and homes that is open for the public to come and see.

Another day was spent cruising around the Hoover Festival. We went to the national Park and viewed (President) Herbert Hoover's childhood house and the Herbert ...

I thought communes were a hippy thing

We have to cross the central part of America and to be frank those planes can be pretty boring.

We have both been reading books about the early pioneers and their treks west, so we decided to head to Council Bluffs Iowa which is right beside Omaha Nebraska. This was a staging town for the  Oregon California and Morman Trails back in 1840 -1870. But before we turned west we headed south for the Amana colonies.  These were villages, which were ...

The purpose of this mission is to perform life saving surgeries on children with heart defects and also teach the local doctors and medical staff how to perform the surgeries themselves so they can take care of the patients on their own. "An Onion"

... and many of us, are very ready to offer that 'onion' in a gesture of goodwill that is actually self-appeasement only. Many simply use token offers of selflessness for two reasons only: in the hopes of gain or in an effort feel good about themselves and their usual self-centeredness. I am not trying to pretend that this idea of selflessness is nowhere in the US, nor that it is everywhere in Russia. Sadly, I admit the ...

So much to remember!

... ice-breaker to talk about where I am from, where I live, and other tidbits. Other gifts include: deck of playing cards with american flag/bald eagle on outside and various sites on inside, 7 postcards (2 elvis Presley (apparently he is all the rave with the ladies), 2 Iowa, 3 NYC. If anyone reading has any suggestions please sign the guestbook with them! OK - too much info for you I'm sure. Probably one more entry before leaving the US from Chicago.
