A sleepless night was followed by a shower and an enormous amount of will power to leave bed this morning. It was probably assisted by the fact my phone was screaming out 30 Seconds to Mars at me. I like them, but even they were pushing it at six o clock this morning. The day ran fairly smoothly (well, okay, there might have been a couple of hick-ups) and seemed to fly by. I was back at Tharnpanya with Thai teacher Mutt ...
Return to KSR:
Both Matt and I had previously been to Bangkok, but some years ago (separately) and were looking forward to seeing how it had changed. Khao San Road is, as any backpacker knows, infamous in Bangkok as the (depending on your view) mecca for travellers or over-touristy hellhole. In any case, we both had fond memories from previous visits but either the place had rapidly changed, we had changed or our memories had been clouded by one too many Singhas the first ...
... a simple hut where the park ranger on duty stays overnight. Just outside this hut is a makeshift memorial to a herd of elephants that were tragically killed in that area. This spot close to the waterfall is a natural feeding ground for the wild elephants that roam in this park. During the rainy season the water flow is high and treacherous, and one year serval elephants were swept into the river and killed as the water took them over the steep gorge. A granite fence ...
... hotel and we settled into our room.
There wasn't much to do in the area, but there was however a 7 11 nearby. One of our favourite shops. We popped in to get some of our favourite thai snacks, for the last time. This included a lime soda, crisps and a thai green pop noodle for me and a toastie for Maureen. These items could only be found in Thailand's 7 11. The snacks were devoured when we got in as this ended up to be our last dinner in Thailand. With time on our hands ...
... underwear seems to be order of the day. The afternoon was spent walking to the MBK center with 6 floors of shops and a somewhat sterile food court. The tiny local Thai place next door was much better. We moved to the Grand 4 Wings Hotel for our last night in Bangkok, as that's where the backpack was stored and much closer to the airport.
Off to HK tomorrow, I think we are ready to go home as we haven't seen home in 2015 yet ...
