Next door to our hotel was a bar, well a couple actually but instead of going home we ended up in one of those, obviously. Even though it was 3:30am now. ... tradition is to bring all the dead over the age six as soon as possible to this site. A pyre is set up as the family gathers to witness the purifying of the body, led by the oldest son. Traditionally, women do not attend as they are "too emotional". Once the son washes his hands and feet in the holy water of the river (faith overcomes the apparent filth of the water source), he then washes the corpse. Once everyone is gathered, the deceased ...

... the beautiful old Buddha statue in gold leaf they have added neon lights shooting from his head! A little Vegas bling in an religious temple!

The end of our sightseeing had arrived and we were off to check-in to the Mandaly Hill Resort Hotel. We all had a chance to freshen up and dress in the traditional Burmese style (longyi) and meet down in lobby to shuttle to the Green Elephant restaurant. I was highly entertained to watch all the men arrive with their long skirts ...
