Flag-Raising and Summer Palace

... the Boxer Rebellion. As it had been for the past few days, weather was again an issue, with heavy haze impeding what would have otherwise been spectacular views from the hillside buildings to the large lake to the west. The immense number of pavilions, lush gardens, and hillside views were still very impressive. The "long gallery" -a nine-hundred meter wooden covered pathway, painted with non-repeating, richly detailed scenes, was the worth the trip alone!

Day 21: Off to Beijing!

... our bags. Everyone's bags came, and so we walked to the exit ramp where we met the director of the Peking University Chinese Department and his student helper Chenyi. When we walked outside we immediately noticed what everyone always talks about when they speak of Beijing: grey. It was grey, dreary, bland, boring. I wanted to go back to Hong Kong - even if it was more expensive. The bus smelled like fake plastic, and ...

Taking milk very seriously

... It's no easy job," Li said in an interview last year. Quality issues of Chinese products hit international headlines last year. First, it was found additives exported from China had contaminated pet food in North America. Then came reports on allegedly unsafe Chinese seafood, candies and toys. As the AQSIQ chief, Li held many press conferences, gave numerous interviews and made several field trips accompanied by journalists. And unlike some other government ...

Mutianyu Great Wall and Olympics tour

... or go inside we did get to see part of the Olympic village. We visited a health area for the athletes and here I received an amazing 20 mimute foot and calf massage like nothing I had ever experienced before. He whacked, pounded and manipulated my legs but after it felt great. Then we stopped at Dr. Tea in the village. We sampled and learned about four types of tea. The ...

Eerste week China!

Lord Heseltine speaks on farming

... and a respect for farmers, but not for farmers who show no respect for the countryside, who only think of the task of the day, and don't take account of proper waste disposal, for example. Nobody would support Pressure Sprayer that and I know it is a very small part of farmers that have anything to do with that sort of thing. Considering the scale involved I think the industry comes out pretty well. But in an increasingly affluent society the pressures on intensive ...

Entry to China: Smells, Histories, Ghosts

... country has really entered into the modern era with the the rest of the world (or the part of the world that matters anyway). But in truth it is the ghosts being judged, the old and the new, and for high points, making the old ghosts new ghosts with a fresh set of paint and a whole new spin. And of the foreign ghost that walked lonely beneath the eaves of the palatial ghost houses? I was intrigued by what I saw. All of the images that I had seen in textbooks, all of ...

Beijing

... West they are not really thinking about there heritage.. this was a lively bustling place before, now its a contruction site. Then we went to Ti'an Amen Square and onto the Forbidden City. Nothing has change to either of these but the number of tourists and in particular western tourists has multiplied. That night I had the nicest Peking Duck I have ever had it was sublime. I have to say with all this development going on, for me Beijing has lost alot of its charm.....

Global culture, regional mindsets

... the Chinese and Western mindsets. I have 6 credits of class in English, and one of my classes is a Chinese government class. The professor, a Chinese American, started off the class by analyzing the difference between the Chinese greeting similar to "how is everyone". The phrase "Da Jia Hao" is used by teachers to greet students, by hosts to greet guests, or just by friends to greet each other. The direct translation is "big family good". There is no ...
