Lucerne to Zurich

In the morning Tania and I drove into the city centre of Lucerne and wandered around the sights. Lucerne is located on the side of a lake and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Highlights included the amazing medieval bridges and old city walls. Late morning we continued the journey to Zurich, and enjoyed lunch in one of the traditional bee...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Intercontinental Hotels Zurich Zürich

Too far out....

from AlexAzar
Ok, I was really apprehensive about staying here given the reviews that were posted here. I stayed with my family at this hotel Nov 22-24, 2004. The hotel itself was not a bad experience. Everyone was extremely helpful and friendly. The rooms were a little small, but not uncomfortable. It was a nice hotel. The problem was the area. It's too far out from the "action." Although the tram stops at the corner, it's a good 15-20 tram ride, stopping every few blocks. I wouldn't walk the area at night. And the only type of restaurants nearby are Indian, Turkish, and Pakistani. The front desk told me the best places to eat (Swiss/German) are in the city center. I would not stay at this hotel again. I would either 1) pony up the money and stay closer to the city center, or 2) skip Zurich altogether. It's is sooo expensive. Big Mac meal (didn't have one, but noticed) cost $14 USD. We left the city after 24 hours. Enough of Zurich. Spend the day there, take pictures, and move on.

The worst Intercontinental in the world

from A TripAdvisor Member
What a horrible hotel. Located in the míddle of nowwhere, it takes more than 10 minutes by tram to the city centre, the hotel next to a red light area. How nice. The hotel itself must have been a complimentary offer to Interconti to operate this hotel, small rooms and myone extremly noisy, as I stayed on the 1st floor to the main street. You could hear and feel the tram passing the hotel and in the rushhour the street is extremly busy as it's one of the major travelling routes to the centre. Stayed already at Montreux, London, Vienna and Berlin at Intercontinental Hotels and they are very much better than this little bit of nothing. If you wnat to have a really good hotel in the city, take the Baur au lac or the Marriott or the new Hyatt, all in a very much better condition and location. Don't waste your money there.

Take a pass

I stayed at the Intercontinental in December of 2003. The rooms were very small, but comfortable, and the food bland and uncreative. The hotel's biggest problem is its location -- pretty much the middle of nowhere in a particularly ugly, industrial part of a lovely city. It reminded me of Queens, NY (exactly what I wanted to escape from). It's quite far from any of the city's sites by tram, so expect some travel time and confusion if you're not familiar with the city's tram system. The staff was not even remotely fluent in English, so communication was difficult at times. Unless you're attending a conference at the Intercontinental itself, and aren't doing any siteseeing while in town, it's worth skipping this hotel.

Not too bad

The hotel is a bit off the beaten track (there are a lot of car dealerships in the area -- that part of town). The hotel is fairly convenient to the 2 and 3 trams, which will take you to either end of Bahnhofstrasse.

The rooms are slightly small and require that you put your cardkey in a slot in the wall before the electricity will turn on (a cost saving measure that I had not seen before and an inconvenience for guests with devices that require recharging). The furniture was sparse in my third floor room. There was no dresser to speak of so my suitcase went on the desk and, apart from the bed, the only place to sit was a small bench. The TV is small and installed up near the ceiling.

The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and their english is quite good. They deal well with business travellers.

I would stay there again, but I would shop around first make sure that the rate was considerably less than the downtown hotels were offering.

Not As Bad As They Say

from jp7124
I just returned from four nights at this property. The hotel is not up to par with other Intercontinental properties but it is clean, comfortable and very accomodating. We had a very pleasant stay. If in Zurich, I would stay there again, especially at the 150CHF rate I received. This hotel is an excellent value at that rate.

Where did the rest of the ppl go ?

I read these reviews before I went - and i was completely prepared for a horrible 2 star accomodation. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes the lobby was deceiving in comparison with the rooms, but the rooms were not altogether bad either. I got a really good deal - so perhaps for people who paid the full price for the rooms, it is not worth it.Also the location is not bad either - its a stone's throw from the tram station which takes you directly into town centre in 10 minutes. Trams are frequent and come every 10 minues as well, so we never had a problem or had to wait for long.I do agree that living in old town would have definitely been much more exciting and convenient, especially in terms of enjoying the zurich nightlife !

Horrible!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I am a frequent traveler to Europe. This hotel does not live up to the Intercontinental name. The rooms were small, dark, very basic and dreary. After complaining, I was upgraded. However, the new room was no better except for a little larger. I was extremely disappointed in the quality of the room and location-not central. Luckily, this stay was just a one night stopover. There are better hotels in Zurich for the price.

More Holiday Inn than Intercontinental

from jodenwlr
I would have to echo the comments of others here. I stayed 4 nights in Oct 2003. If you get a great rate and do not mind being a bit out of the center, this is an OK choice. My rate of 170 CHF was cheap by Swiss standards for the days I was to be in town, so I took it.

The rooms are quite small. I had 2 feet on each side of the bed with a small built in desk/mini bar along the window. The bath was OK, but all in all the room was dated and plain. The matress is quite soft, so avoid if you have back problems. The hotel felt more 2 star than 4 or 5 star. The 5 CHF rate per phone call was also a bit steep.

The hotel had a few pluses though. (1) free internet terminal in the room which you could plug your laptop into, (2) great hotel gym which catered to guests and locals - lots of equipment and a full turkish bath in the locker room area, (3) staff was friendly and efficient, (4) lobby bar was open late if you wanted to escape your tiny hotel room.

If you are looking to be more in the center of town, this is not the place. Trams run until around 12:30 AM and can get you around nicely if you are willing to commute. 15 minute ride to the main train station was not bad. Taxi's were generally available at the stand in front of the hotel, but quite pricey. All in all I would probably stay elsewhere next time, but if the price was right, I might reconsider.

Tiny rooms and bad location.

from A TripAdvisor Member
Tiny rooms and bad location, this is not what you expect from an InterContinental Hotel. We spend two nights at this hotel in June 2003 and got a terrific rate of 220 Swiss Franc (about $150US) which included taxes and buffet breakfast for two. This is the price of a two star hotel in Zurich! However, it is situated in a residential area away from touristic sites although there is a tram stop just in front of the hotel which brings you to the center in 20 minutes. Peoples at check-in are efficient. Efficiency is probably one word that describes best this place; total lack of personnality is an other aspect that is less appealing. For a typical Swiss feeling, go elsewhere. Our room, which was a typical standard room, was tiny. Two people can just feel crampy in such a small space. Decor was typically... plain. The upscale bath products was the only luxury touch we noticed. But telephone charges (4,50 Swiss Franc for a local call from the room and no phone booths operating with coins available) was another type of luxury anemities that was less pleasant!!! We had a decent food at the main restaurant the first night. Dishes was ordered from a special summer menu sensibly priced. The regular menu was outrageously expensive. An imposing buffet breakfast is served in a cafeteria style area where cell phones are forbidden - good idea. In resume, this hotel is not at the level of other InterContinental properties. Book there if you can get a great rate and don't mind about location; otherwise, try to find something more central.

Find a better location than this

This hotel is a long way from the downtown. There are better downtown locations than this. The staff is friendly. The gym is very poorly maintained and inconvenient. The gym is contracted out and not run by the hotel. The televisions sets are very small, but they do have connection to the Internet.
