... animal swam past. Its body was about 40 cm long with a long tail. At first I thought otter but then I thought rat. It turns out to be a ragondin. It is a large semi aquatic rodent or beaver rat. The next day we saw a few of them and one was very large indeed. Apparently the can get up to 60cm in body length and over 40cm long tail. Needless to say we did not go down to the river and made sure Frankie's door was shut tight.

... seemed quite a bit, and today we had the strongest head wind we've had, but still not too bad. Riding through less mountainous and more undulating countryside, we were very surprised to suddenly see our canal and the locks, running the opposite way. After a few days of gradual up hills, we had quite a good downhill section. In fact in 2 kms there were 18 locks, so the canal dropped away very quickly. We left the Doubs ...

... the area each little hamlet has built an Aire and provides services for us to use, desperately trying to encourage us to stay a while. We are going to, it's lovely. Clive's pinged the only thing that appears to be open each afternoon. A bar selling German beer! The other shops appear to have just been abandoned. One still has old dusty books on its shelves, another has an old typewriter on the back table and an old Supermarket type grocers still has packet foods in its ...
