To Vimy Ridge, north of Arras, Hill 145, where the Canadian Monument and several cemeteries are located as part of the Vimy Ridge National Historic Site of Canada. The only other historic site outside Canada is Beaumont-Hamel.

Train to Ieper/Ypres. On the station, an older couple arrived who turned to us for help. Ha! Anyway, they were Canadian, so we could communicate and confirm that they were on the correct platform. They were heading to Poperinge from where they planned to explore the Ypres Salient on bikes. During the conversation, learnt that not only did she grow up on PEI, but her grandmother came from Newfoundland! ...

... and stamped our seat reservations. This time the conductor (who was French) took our ticket, looked at them then, looked back at both Suzanne and I, and then scowling said "I should shoot you"... I looked back at him smiling, thinking he was joking with us about something, but in a deadly serious tone, he repeated, "you should be shot" Realising he was obviously not joking and was upset about something, I asked him what was wrong and he said in poor French English, ...

... gates across the entrance, so 3rd time no water! We then decided not to go to Lens as there was no water being shown on our chart as available up there (not that we have been able to get it where it does show it on our chart either) but to carry on to Courcelles les Lens where there is a harbour off the main canal with water and electric.

Isi has to thank Tom Burns for teaching her how to "ferry glide" as it came in very useful ...

... catch up over dinner that night in a local restaurant, Marie (my Dad’s Sister) and Jim have lived there about 23 years. So it was lovely to hear them chatter away to the host at the restaurant in fluent French! They also speak Flemish – spoken in Flanders in North Belgium. They are a wonderful source of information, guiding us on where best to visit while in these part of Europe. So we have our rip sorted now! Thanks ...
