The one where we jumped the fence

... the Hilton where both the US soccer team and lots of fans were staying. There we watched the team depart the hotel, then jumped on a private shuttle bus, and headed down to the stadium. The bus had a relatively small number of fans -- perhaps 25 of us or so? We had a police escort for the bus ride there, and we were able to go past the barricades, and arrive directly outside the stadium (otherwise, a taxi would have dropped us off several blocks away, since ...

Day two of the curfew

... the words as I go. I regularly speak Spanish, but find it hard recreationally as my vocab knowledge is so limited.

We are running out of vegetables but can go and get some more flour today from the local pulperia (local shop which is on the side of a house!) to make some tortillas. We are listening out for any kids coming around to sell fruit and vegetables. It is great that we have ...

Being at the front of the classroom

... act like wild animals.

My first thought was, "All the children I have been thinking about and planning for and imagining all actually right in front of me in one room! Ah! My class has 9 sweet little girls and 17 boys, 5 of which seem to have been raised by wolves. They climb all over each other and lay sprawled out on the floor for no reason. On the first day we had some near-escapees who tried to run out the door. It’s hard to teach such a group how to be normal ...

Where am I living? Who am I living with? Answers!

... good tips from her experience teaching preschool and kindergarten last year. She is also about a foot taller than me so we make a funny looking pair.

That’s the team! We all get along well! I live in the volunteer house with K-Lo, Samira, Katharine and Jessica. I was surprised how all of us are pretty clean, but then I thought maybe it is just because this is the filthiest house I’ve ever lived in. The other teachers live in 3 apartments a few blocks away.

... to play with water and that was the cheapest place to get them. They are about ½ m in diameter and maybe 40 cm deep and I got them for about £2.50 each. Not bad eh? I tried haggling but the lady was not going to budge! I'm hoping to find someone to give me a lift with all my school stuff next week, as well as finding somewhere secure for them.

The town of Cofradia

... The roads are unpaved and often are deeply rutted; I guess the heavy rains carve the channels. I see a lady sweeping ours every other day, so they do take some care with them. Whilst the roads are dusty, there is quite a lot of greenery, especially palms and bananas. Our neighbour here, was tilling the soil yesterday, I guess maybe to plant some corn and beans (2 common crops here). Most families seem to have an allotment area ...

Finally in Honduras

... up of various parents of students at the school. I got to meet some of my future students and their parents, which was exciting! In my mind I was joking, “I am going to change your life little boy”!

On Saturday, one of the schools graduates led us on a hike to a little waterfall and water hole. We swam all day, jumped off the rocks and slid down the waterfall. Basically, we spent the day in paradise. The river runs through hills covered in ...

Welcome Back Miss Claudia!

Our flights went well yesterday. Paige & Kim are staying at "The Rocks" which is Ben & Terry's creation- a jungle pool with a tree house, a bunkhouse, a restaurant, and even a little dance floor now. They will be turning it into a hostel soon. My mom & I are staying with a family that I became close to last year. They are SO generous- we are actually sleeping in their bed and they are sleeping with their children! We ...

New York-San Pedro Sula

... he'd gotten my email that I was coming, if he was still there, or was languishing in some Midnight Express-style prison. Whatever it was, it was too late to turn back. The line was tediously long, but I was admitted through without incident. When I walked outside, I quickly located Luis, the owner of the Dos Molinos Guesthouse where I was staying, who ushered me away from the mini-chaos of taxi ...

Omoa is not Samoa

... to offer, but basically we are just here to wait to take the boat to Belize on Monday morning. We checked into the Bahia de Omoa hotel. The owner of our hotel is German and offered us to take us to the boat on Monday, which is a great relief. Beside that we will do not much more then eat, drink, sleep and watch TV. Two days not getting on a bus is quite a rest! Cheerio!
