Our day started at 8.30am when we were picked up from our hotel by the tour company in an 'air conditioned' mini bus. We were excited for the adventure ahead of us and started talking with other travellers from France, Netherlands and Germany. An hour or so into the trip, as the day started to get hotter,we realised the air conditioning wasn't really working and the vents were blowing out air, hot air in fact. The expected 10 hour journey took over 12 hours ...

At 2am when we opened our bedroom door to go to the toliet a guy was standing their trying to hire us a coat lol. At 3am we were in the jeep and could already see jeep lights heading across the volcano desert taking people to a nearby mountain to watch sunrise. Our jeep driver was good and overtook many jeeps in the desert before ascending up the mountain. At the top I could not believe how many jeeps were there and subsequently loads of people waiting for sunrise. ...

Once we arrived at Bromo we changed from our car to ...

Our double rest day in Yogyakarta did its recuperation work that we so badly needed, helped by a traditional Javanese massage on the Friday afternoon. There were several massage places to choose from, but the House of Relax with its "No Drug. No Sex." sign sounded like a reputable place. On the Saturday morning, we decided to take a visit to the Sultan's palace and within metres of leaving the hotel one of the nearby becak (rickshaw) drivers was asking us if we’d perhaps ...

... of the time I simple stood back and watched in awe. She never really came close but spoiled us with her acrobatics for quite sometime before carrying her baby off into the distance.

Hopeful for more sightings we headed deeper into the jungle. With this came more challenge of steep climbs and denser foliage. Exhausted and having a hard time breathing in the humid air we took several water and fruit breaks along the way. With still no clues of another orangutan ...
