Cemero Lawang & Mt. Bromo: a REAL volcano!

A travel blog entry by geogging-around on Mar 22, 2015

To our dismay, we checked out of our lovely Yogyakarta hotel early on the 21st, and boarded what we thought was an 8 hour mini bus journey to the tiny mountain village of Cemero Lawang, 2217m above sea level. It was a seriously hot and stuffy journey due to the fact that we had no air con, little leg room and were so close to the hot engine. I expected half of the journey to be a slow uphill drive around hairpin bends and what not, but we didn't even start climbing ...

Up at 1am for the first day of our 3 day adventure in East Java and we were greeted by our guide Selemat and our driver Harry. Selemat's English was excellent which made things so easy, he also spoke Dutch, Javanese and some Arabic so a very clever chap. Our trusty steed was a lovely air condition 6 seater with comfy pillows and chairs that reclined so it was possible to get a couple of hours kip before meeting up with the 4WD that would take us the rest ...

We left Banyuwangi by train, executive business class actually, as the scars of our bus experience had not quite worn off.  Our next checkpoint was Mount Bromo, known locally as Gunung Bromo, which is an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif in East Java. At 2,329 metres (7,641 ft) it is not the highest peak of the massif, but is the most well known. The volcano belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and the name of Bromo is ...

Our day started at 8.30am when we were picked up from our hotel by the tour company in an 'air conditioned' mini bus. We were excited for the adventure ahead of us and started talking with other travellers from France, Netherlands and Germany. An hour or so into the trip, as the day started to get hotter,we realised the air conditioning wasn't really working and the vents were blowing out air, hot air in fact. The expected 10 hour journey took over 12 hours ...

At 2am when we opened our bedroom door to go to the toliet a guy was standing their trying to hire us a coat lol. At 3am we were in the jeep and could already see jeep lights heading across the volcano desert taking people to a nearby mountain to watch sunrise. Our jeep driver was good and overtook many jeeps in the desert before ascending up the mountain. At the top I could not believe how many jeeps were there and subsequently loads of people waiting for sunrise. ...
