Sanur, Bali

Breakfast on the balcony was a treat of local fresh fruits, local tea and and toast with REAL butter ! We spent a few days here in Sanur relaxing/reading on the white sandy beach, rock pooling and swimming in the warm sea - all with Factor 30+ on. We met some expats one evening, one in particular 'Uncle Will' was from Milton Keynes and was a retired PADI (diving) instrutctor with 15 years experience. Uncle Will expressed his opinion that the Island of Lembongan (off the coast of Sanur) was th...

Just flew in...and boy are my arms tired.

Wow. It's officially been 24 hours since I got on the first plane in San Francisco, and I'm quite tired. Problem is, it's 5pm Bali time and I still have at least 5 hours left before I can safely call it bed time. I have Ambien. And I'm looking forward to using them. My airline of choice for this trip was China Airlines. A few impressions....first of all, the stewardesses were gorgeous. I don't know why that stuck out in my mind (I'm usually not into checking out hot, female, flight attendants...

Silence is Golden

So I just realized that all of my travel blog subscribers from my previous trip are now getting emails about my new trip.  So hello!   To be honest, I'm finding it much more difficult than last time to find the time to write.  Internet cafes aren't as plentiful as they were in India, and being in a front of a computer is getting harder and harder as my time progresses in Bali.  But most recently, I haven't been writing because I was participating in my 5 day meditation retreat with Art of Liv...

A long-awaited Reunion

We were on a morning flight from Singapore to Bali to meet up with Dad and Susan for our long-awaited reunion. It was wonderful to see them. They look exactly the same - good. It felt like 110 degrees at the airport. Our driver, Jeffrey took us to our hotel - Grand Bali Beach Resort in Sanur in the south west part of Bali. We spent the rest of the afternoon catching up and relaxing by the pool drinking Bintang (Indonesian beer). We headed to the other side of southern Bali to a restaurant cal...

Day 128: Sanur to Ubud

We're close to Oz now. On the menu, I find an Australian breakfast as well as the usual European and American. Sanur really is a dull resort. Pensioners cycle around the Grand Bali Beach Hotel golf course or lounge by the pools that fringe the beach path. The beach has the smell of weed revealed at low tide. Boat rental agents harangue you for trade. I'm here mostly for the only Qantas branch in Bali. Last month's rainy weather reached my flight tickets tucked in my backpack and washed all th...

Keremas Surf Competition

... Cars and motor bikes take advantage of the full road: both their side and the opposing side of traffic, going as close as possible to running head on into another vehicle. The only way to not get hit or in an accident here is to play by their rules. You have to go in and out; there is no other way around it. Of course, I in particular use extreme caution. Believe me, I'm more frightened by these cars than anything else. Suzanna got the feel ...

... for them. As we're on our way downhill, Kristi ran through some cinders with her bike and put on the front brakes instead of the rear and flew off the bike. The bike happened to have the opposite brake system as her bike at home. She walked away with some minor cuts. No worries... We ended our tour with lunch at our guide's cousins home. All in all, it was a nice tour. We wanted to hike one of the volcanoes nearby while we were in Ubud so we ...

Finally - some time for fun and to see Bali

After completing a full day workshop on tracking poverty levels of the borrowers - Dr. Kulkarni and I enjoyed a great evening at the beach in Bali. We leave in a couple of hours for a full day tour with a driver. Here are some pictures of the workshop hotel (gorgeous - right on the beach) a picture of Jeff - a tremendous workshop leader from Grameen Foundation and then pictures of Dr. Kularni and I at the beach - just before sunset.

A scorpion sting makes Bali bor-ing!

... crazy cow! After digging out the sting and filling quite a few gauzes in blood and stinky discharge, she cleaned up and flew away in Thunderbird 1 (OK, so it wasn't that swish but it did have a fluorescent green stripe down the side!), leaving me with a course of antibiotics, some fancy looking anti-inflammatory cream and an obscene medical bill (about time we used that insurance!). The next morning I awoke at 6am to a sneezing fit, with my hands all puffy and a 'parasite ...

Strange but True (and often Hilarious)

After I realised it is not really possible to write a blog while traveling I started to think of doing these lists of "best of" or the funny interesting things about places I go. So here I start but it is not finished yet and I wouldn't expect it to be within the next year (or more :) The Greatest Names for things: People get really ...
