Delightful Delphi

... left standing. Ewe found out that Greek pillars are fluted and that Roman pillars are not. Engraved on individual tablets of rock made up into a wall at one part of the site were the slaves' stories celebrating when they became free men. The engraved printing made on the rocks was tiny and yet very accurate and neat and the stones were interlinked without any cementing, both tasks of impressive craftsmanship.
On the return trip to Athens there was a stop at ...

... fine temperature, light breeze. Far off in the distance I can see massed clouds hanging over the valley down towards Athens. Ah, to be up in the hills, basking in it! After about an hour, they are not so far any more & I am beginning to regret discarding proper cagoule for lightweight thingy in pack that doesn't keep the water out at all...
Am getting strong sense of the kind of impression ...

Ye gods(2)!!!
Day 17 We decide to head south too. Even if wet, big city can offer many distractions, we reflect. Get robbed by motorway bandits (in booths!) Bit of a low-point this - not what you expect in Greece. Scarcely seen the sun: but road is very fast and smooth and it does begin to dry out the further we go. Hopes secretly rise... Just after Lamia, turn off to look for memorial to Leonides, heroic Spartan leader of 300 who held off massive army of Xerxes at ...

... and pretty touristic) town... our tour guide told us that it is the second-most popular tourist location in Greece, second only to the Parthenon in Athens.

The town was considered a religious center of the Ancient World. I'm sure you've heard of the Oracle of Delphi, which is the name of the ancient ruins. "Oracle" in this case means 3 things: the physical site of the temple, the priestess ...

Delphi: The gods favorite place on earth.

Traveling from Athens to Delphi:

At Terminal B we got our tickets and boarded our bus right away. We left at 3:30pm, paid 13.60 Euros and it took 3 hours to get to Delphi.

Delphi:

So why go to Delphi? Because Delphi is amazing! First it's beautiful- the town is located ontop of a cliff and the views are of the hills and mountains covered in shades of green and gold (Cypress and Olive Trees). And then further off in the distance there is ...

... and on to Delphi. When we got to Delphi .....well you could say things are not well marked. We drove past the ruins and into town. When we found someone who spoke English they informed us we needed to go back the way we came. We made it to the site of The Temple of Apollo where the Oracle would receive messages from Apollo and was then translated by ...

Delfi

Efter at have ...

... for our little meeting, then off to bed early. The wakeup call came a 6:40 am :( and we were on our way to the Acropolis by 8am. We had a wonderful tour guide who was very informative and interesting, explaining what each site used to look like and the dstruction that caused the temples to fall to ruins. Most of the damage was not caused by the more than 2,000 years of time and natural elements that the structure faced, but rather a ...

The Oracle of Delphi

... helmets and weapons brought back from victorious soldiers, to pay thanks to the gods. The statue of Antinos - commissioned by Hadrian was in pretty good condition. The most famous find though was in one of the final rooms. The infamous Charioteer stands in a room all to himself. This hollow bronze statue is all that remains of what must have been a great work of art. Most amazing to me was that its eyes were still intact - you could see ...
