... of living were terrible but the people were happy and really friendly. There were pigs dogs and cats just roaming free. We chatted with them and drank some strong thai rum and whisky. They cooked for us too and were very welcoming. It got dark really quickly and i was determined not to go to the toilet until it got light again. ... grass-roof huts with dirt floors, but the houses where like nice log cabins. The house in which I stayed had two bathrooms, and one had hot water. Then, there was this nice kitchen in which our host-mother, our "khun mae", cooked us wonderful meals. She didn’t sit with us, but by now I accept that that is what they do.
