Mekong River Cruise

Kerry left for the airport early to go to Goa where he has a Dee Jay gig. Kip and I met Nikkum at 8:30 for a walk through the local market where we saw fish, chicken, all types of vegetables and one thing I had never seen before. A pile of cooked rats on sticks. Really!

We made our way to the Mekong for a 2 hour cruise up river. The boat …

Here we are in another country. Unlike the cities we visited in Vietnam, this one is packed with Europeans and only a few Asian tourists. We haven't seen many Americans anywhere. The town of about 50,000 is set between the mighty Mekong River and the small Nam Khan river and is loaded with charm. It retains it's old world character and classic …

Amazing Elephants

... all paid extra to go into the river on the elephants to play. At times, it was like being on a bucking bronco in a river. We fell in so many times...one time, right into the river where the elephant had just pooed. The caves were not very impressive, just a cave with a lot of buddha statues inside. At the whiskey village, we all tried some Laos whiskey. I got given a shot which they said was 5% alcohol...after drinking it with a guy on our trip and ...

... Got into Luang Prabang quite late after an 8 hour bus journey through the mountains. The scenery was stunning and we got to eat lunch with a great view. Can't say I enjoyed sitting in a small bus for 8 hours though. Went for a quick orientation walk and saw the night market before dinner and a few drinks. All the bars close at 11:30 because it is a UNESCO World Heritage city so we ended up going to a bowling ...

Great location near the Night Market. Easy walk to restaurants, temples and museum. The service was excellent. The breakfast has great choices of Asian and western foods. Ask for a room in front where you can watch the Night Market from your balcony. Big room and nice bath.
