Around the island and around town

... Today we toured the town, including its small Byzantine Museum and the Genoese Kastro (fort), with its thick walls, narrow streets, and lovingly restored hammam. On the way to get the car, Dan walked through a camp of about a thousand refugees from Syria and Afghanistan and donated to an American charity that's helping the UNHCR to house and feed them. Then we drove around the beautiful citrus growing area of Kambos, south of town.
Off to Lindos (via Athens) tomorrow.

On Tuesday we visited the 11th century Byzantine monastery at Nea Moni; its mosaics, though damaged by Turkish attacks and fire in 1822 and a major earthquake in 1881, are the most vivid and beautiful we've ever seen. We then drove to two lovely high-mountain villages - Anavatos and Avgonyma - ...

Pyrgi, which we visited today, is a work of art - full of black and white houses decorated in the Genoese sgraffito style. ...

We flew into Chios Friday evening and checked into the Grecian Castle, a comfortable hotel on the seafront. Saturday we visited a lovely old library dedicated to Chiot history and culture; then the Archeology Museum, where we saw a stone tablet with an order from Alexander the Great granting home rule to Chios along with his letter asking the Chiots to be lenient with his ...

... Bev our Australian hostess provided me with cold & flu tablets which were very helpful. So I rested whilst the group toured some of Chios and visited a citrus farm, of which the latter wasn't so very interesting.
Lunch on the ship, and about noon we set sail for Mykonos.
