    ... the French in 1947, it was badly damaged and then in 1968 it was bombed by the North Vietnamese before they took the city and then By the Americans before they took it back. No photos were allowed inside but this didn't stop some young locals taking photos on their iPhones. It took them about three years to study here to pass the national and then royal exams. They then became Mandarins (scholars) and doctors.

    ... at a cafe for a few hours we continued our observations of this fabulous city. Before heading to the supermarket to stock up on supplies for our train trip to sapa.
